Knox confirmed as head coach of Marauders

November 25, 2016 – The McMaster Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce that it has removed the interim tag, and that Greg Knox has been hired as the Head Coach of the Marauder football team.

Knox assumed the interim position of McMaster Head Coach in May of 2016, and he guided the Marauders to a record of 6 and 2, a third-place finish in the OUA, and a narrow semi-final loss to the eventual Yates Cup winner from Laurier.

Director of Athletics and Recreation Glen Grunwald says he is confident that Knox is the best man for the demanding job of guiding the Marauder football squad.Ā  “Greg has a tremendous history with the program and from everything I’ve seen, his drive to excel will keep McMaster a contender on the U Sports landscape,” Grunwald explained. “I believe Coach Knox understands that our players are students and athletes, and helping them reach their potential is as much a part of the job as winning games.”

Prior to assuming the McMaster head coaching mantle, Knox had coached in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2015.Ā  He also served eight years as the Marauder Defensive Coordinator, and that stretch was highlighted by a record 21-game winning streak, Vanier Cup berths in 2011, 2012, and 2014, along with McMaster’s first National title in 2011.

“This is a challenge that I am extremely excited about and I’m grateful for the opportunity, “said Knox. “This past season was a great learning experience in many ways, and now I can focus on assembling the best staff I can in order to compete with the best teams in Canada.”

A former Vanier Cup champion as a player with Wilfrid Laurier University in 1991, Knox went on to play for the Calgary Stampeders, where he was a CFL All-Star, Team Captain, CFLPA Board Member, andĀ  a winner of two Grey Cup championships (’92, ’98) that bookended his eight-year CFL career.
