Position Overview

The Dinos Athletics in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Assistant Coach, Football for approximately 3 years.

The University of Calgary Athletic Department supports 14 varsity teams and nine competitive clubs. A unit within the Faculty of Kinesiology, Dinos Athletics competes within the Canada West Conference and the U SPORTS association. Dinos Athletics is committed to competing with the very best university teams in Canada while building pride on campus.

Reporting to the Head Coach and Program Manager, Football with accountabilities to the Director, Athletics this position involves travel as well as work on weekends, holidays and evenings. This full-time position requires high physical demands and has periods of medium to high levels of stress.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop highly competitive players. Work with Head Coach and Program Manager, Football, to deliver year round skill and physical development plans
  • Ensure that players are effectively performing techniques and in such a way that they are among the very best in U SPORTS. Annual improvement should occur
  • Ensure that the team takes advantage of its strengths and is prepared for competition. It is expected that the assistant coach will have advanced tactical knowledge and be able to apply it during times of significant pressure
  • Responsible for the management of all offensive or defensive players (approximately 45). This requires the assistant coach to work independently with a large group of student athletes. Required to work with other position assistant coaches, staff and academic coordinator to ensure that players are advancing towards their goals
  • Lead on the coordination and management of all recruiting efforts, in conjunction with Head Coach and other staff. This is a complex piece of work requiring multiple skill sets. Annually, the Dinos will recruit upwards of 300 student athletes in order to secure approximately 30 for a given recruiting class
  • Ensure that the Dinos recruiting system uses current technology and systems in order to attract the very best talent
  • At all times, promote student academic success
  • Effectively execute of all required administrative duties in a timely fashion, in line with the department processes and schedules. Requirement to understand budget and financial accountability for the development of funds to support the program
  • Comply and work with all University, Canada West and U SPORTS playing and award regulations. Adhere to department policies, procedures and timelines
  • Accountable for the management and administration of Dinos summer football camps as well as an annual coach clinic. The incumbent is responsible for planning, staffing and execution, including working with department summer camp staff on various program and marketing initiatives
  • Commit to and engage with team and department community engagement initiatives, including working with alumni groups. This will require advanced personal effectiveness skills given the number of alumni and the importance of their support to the Dinos football program. Dinos Football alumni are among the most involved alumni on-campus

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Kinesiology or related degree
  • 5 years coaching experience in football, preferably at the college, university, junior or professional, 10+ years experience is preferred
  • Coaching certification is required
  • 3+ years recruiting CIS football players nationally. Proven track record of securing recruits from all parts of Canada as well as international recruits
  • Advanced knowledge of and commitment to high performance team building and player development, demonstrated experience with team management
  • Experience and understanding of elite university and professional football systems in order to achieve national success for one of the highest profile programs in Canada
  • Experience and expertise in managing the public relations requirements of one of the highest profile University of Calgary programs
  • Strong communication, administration and budget skills required
  • Experience managing multiple part-time staff and student assistants such that they are able to support a nationally ranked football team
  • Knowledge of electronic communication systems, video analysis software, and MS Office suite an asset
