Island Well Drillers drop to 1-2 in Nova Scotia junior varsity football action


The Cape Breton Island Well Drillers dropped to 1-2 in week three of the Nova Scotia Jr. Varsity league action on the losing end of a dominating 48-14 victory by the Halifax SeaHawks played Sunday at Oland Stadium on the St. FX campus in Antigonish.

The SeaHawks opened the scoring in the first quarter with running back Ryan Kublek finishing off their first drive with a 6 yard major. After the Drillers sputtered on offence the Seahawks marched down the field and put another 7 points on the board with tailback Scott Baigent taking it in from the 3 yard line to end the first quarter up 14-0.

The second quarter started much the same with the Seahawks continuing to batter the Drillers and up the score to 21-0 with another Seahawks runner Drew MacIssac scoring from 7 yards out. The Drillers tried to mount a comeback with halfback Sam Demone taking a screen pass from QB Brandon Buckingham in for a 11 yard touchdown to narrow the score to 21-7. The come back continued when cornerback Whatt McElhinny blocked a SeaHawks punt and linebacker Mike MacMillian scoop it up and dashed 32 yards for the score. The Halifax team regained their momentum with a late touchdown pass to wideout Ian Farrell to end the half with a 28-14 lead.

The second half was much of the same with the Seahawks dominating play aided by numerous costly penalties by the Cape Breton team. Wideout A’dre Fraser added to his stellar day with two touchdowns, one an 8 yard reception and another on a 65 yard punt return. Kublek also added his second of the day with a 37 yard dash to the end zone to make the final 48-14 SeaHawks. Kicker Rob Wilson was good on 6 of 7 converts for the mainland team while Nick Walsh converted both Drillers TD’s. The Drillers are back in action next week taking on the HRM Metro Mustangs in a 1:30 start Sunday in Antigonish.
