IFAF brings 35 athletes on ‘development squad’: Led by Canadian coach Tim Enger

Three Development Team Standouts Will Be Named To World Team Roster
On Monday To Face Team USA in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, February 2

The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) has selected 35 athletes from 12 countries for the IFAF Development team as part of the annual Team USA vs. the World event in Austin, Texas. The aim of bringing together the group of international American football prospects is to identify and develop candidates for future World Team rosters.

On Monday morning, three of the players on the 2011 IFAF Development Team will be elevated to the roster for the World Team that will take on the U.S Under 19 National Team assembled by USA Football on Wednesday, February 2 at Austin Westlake Stadium. The World Team features the best players aged 19-and-under selected from among the 59 IFAF member countries under Canadian head coach GREG MARSHALL, and currently has 42 of its available 45 roster spots filled.

The IFAF Development Team is taking part in practices in Austin with the World Team this week, enabling the coaching staff to select the three players who best fit the needs of the roster and are likely to make an impact against Team USA.

The 2011 World Development Team roster is comprised of players representing American Samoa (6), Australia (4), France (1), Germany (1), Italy (1), Japan (7), Mexico (1), Netherlands (2), Norway (2), Serbia (3), Spain (2), and Sweden (5).

“We felt it was important to give as many players as possible the opportunity to come here and be exposed to this level of football,” said IFAF Development Team coordinator TIM ENGER. “Once the coaching staff picked the main roster, we looked at the next generation of kids that are born in 1992 or 1993 who can potentially come back to this team next year.

“This is great for the kids, because you don’t really know what is out there until you come to an event like this. So the players come here, and get inspired by it and we hope that they spread the word when they go back to their home countries.”

One of the promising Development Team prospects is Australian lineman Rory Dew, who is signing a letter of intent to play at University if the Incarnate Word in nearby San Antonio. He has been playing football for four years with the Monash Warriors and has helped his squad to three state championships. Dew was also selected to the Australian junior national Outback team.

“I wanted to come to the development team to see how Australia football compares with the rest of the world and to improve as a player,” said Dew. “I’m learning new ideas and schemes that will help me to better my self as a player.”

Dew, who has been practicing with the World team roster, gave his input on how the team is progressing, saying: “We are definitely making some progress. I may be a little biased, but I feel defensive is more kill ball and offensive has a little more thought behind it. We are getting some timing down, blocking schemes, and the o-line is communicating really well. At the rate we are going, I feel we are going to be very competitive.”

The World Team coaching staff will select three players from the development team to fill the final three spots of the roster that will face the U.S Under 19 National team on Wednesday, February 2 at 7:30pm CT at Austin Westlake Stadium in Austin, Texas.
