Huskies’ future impact (VIDEO)

Oshawa defensive back commits to AUS team’s 2014 class

Clay Matthews-Reid is Halifax bound.

Last week after a couple of months of deliberating with his family, the 5’11, 175 pound defensive back from Oshawa, Ontario committed to the Saint Mary’s Huskies for the 2014 AUS season.

Upon his official visit to the Halifax, Nova Scotia campus, Matthews-Reid liked the atmosphere surrounding the school as well as the strength of the football program.

“When on my recruiting trip I could really feel how community based not only the school was but the whole city was in general,” recalled Matthews-Reid.  “I came from a really big family growing up so being able to be in an environment that would give me that familiar feeling definitely helped sway the decision.”

“I’ve known that I was going to be attending St. Mary’s in fall for the last couple of months, the reason why I took so long to officially commit was solely due to my fear of leaving my home and family. My family has made it clear that they would support me regardless of what I chose to do, which really took the pressure off of me.”

Additionally, the Ontario defensive back found a perfect fit with his academic goals.

“I will be taking Commerce in fall, being able to attend a school that had a Master’s Program offered at the school was also something I stressed highly when choosing a school,” said Matthews-Reid.  “Saint Mary’s, having a Master’s Program just seemed to fit perfectly with what I hope to achieve academically in university.”

Ultimately, the main decisive factor in his decision was the opportunity to contribute and be part of the Huskies gridiron tradition of excellence.

“The main reason why I want to play for the Huskies is because they are a constant contender in their division,” explained Matthews-Reid.  “Being part of a winning program is something that is very important, being a highly competitive person like myself.”

“Coach Perry (Marchese) really sold me on the team by being very straight up and to the point with any questions I had.  I look forward to being part of this team and making an impact in the years to come.”

Matthews-Reid has previously suited up for the Oshawa Hawkeyes of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL). In 2013, the defensive back (cornerback) led the league in interceptions with nine.

As for the Huskies, the team is looking forward to welcoming Matthews-Reid into the fold.

“We are very happy to have Clay join us at Saint Mary’s,” commented Huskies Head Coach Perry Marchese.  “He is a great addition to the family.”
