HS PREVIEW: Same team, different look

For Guelph District 10ā€™s John F Ross Royals, there will be a couple of things that might look just a little different from the team that won the Championship in 2013.

For starters, Jeff Yanchus has left on a high.Ā  After three straight championships and seventh in nine seasons, Yanchus thought that the time was right for him to step down.

Tim Mathewson has taken over the reins from Yanchus.

Another difference is that the team has lost several players who were selected as All-Stars last year. Among the key losses for the Royals include linebacker Alex Lacelle (Ottawa Gee-Gees), defensive lineman Cage Maracle (Waterloo Warriors), quarterback Tommy Yanchus, receiver and returner Jordan Hofstra, running back Willie Ranachan, defensive lineman Kurt Kocher and kicker Dominic Janus.

The Royals will hand over quarterbacking duties to Walker Breen.Ā  This is a promotion for Breen as he was in a supporting role to Yanchus last season.Ā  Additionally, he has added experience of playing with the Guelph Gryphons of the Ontario Football Conference (OFC).

While the Royals have lost several players, depth may not be a concern as over 70 players.

This past Friday, the Royals began their championship defence with a 41-6 victory over Bishop Macdonnell Celtics.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
