Holland College looks to avenge in week 3

The Holland College Hurricanes football team will look to avenge their loss last season against the returning champs when they hit the road again to square off against the Dalhousie Tigers this Saturday.

Head Coach Ross Young said it’s always entertaining when the team plays under the lights at Wickwire field against a well-coached and prepared team that seems to do everything right.

“Dalhousie has a good running and passing game. They have strong player personnel, so we will have to be on our toes,” he said.

Last week was an important victory for the Hurricanes against the UNB – Saint John Seawolves. The team made some adjustments based on the first game of the season against the Red Bombers, Young said.

“We were happy with a lot of things we saw in the first game, but there were a lot of things we had to clean up, like mental mistakes, that cost us some yards and scores.”

Last week the ‘Canes were a more disciplined team against the Seawolves and it was important for the defensive and offensive units to tighten up their play.

“The confidence gained helps as we prepare for the Dalhousie Tigers, who are going to be very strong. We definitely have to keep our focus.”

The Hurricanes had a good week of practice with players working hard and getting good reps.

“The team wants to make an impact this Saturday, and we like what we see in our preparation.”

Dalhousie’s offense can attack in the air quickly and can come back with the read option and some counter run plays. They have two diverse running backs, both very good. Their receivers are disciplined and run their routes very well.

“Our defense will have to be disciplined in their coverage, and the defensive line will have to be stronger and quicker off the ball. We will have to put pressure on their young quarterback early. Our defense will have to come out and set the tone early by getting behind their offense and disrupting some plays,” he said.

This week, the Hurricanes are looking for the defensive secondary to step up and make some big plays by shutting down the deep threat and the defensive line shutting down the Dalhousie running game.

“We’re looking for our offense to bring similar dimensions to the table that the Dalhousie team can bring,” Young said.

The ‘Canes respect Dalhousie head coach Mark Haggett. He and his staff will have their team disciplined and prepared.

“We anticipate a battle. Our team must be ready to paly 60 minutes of hard-nosed, smart football,” he said.

The game kicks off at 6 p.m. The Hurricanes are on the road again next week to play the UNB – Fredericton Red Bombers, and play their second home game on Saturday, October 14, when they square off against UNB – Saint John at 1 p.m. on MacAdam Field at UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place.
