It was a busy week across Simcoe County with the SCAA and CSASC seasons getting underway. Most games finished with rather lopsided scorelines, Our Game of The Week between the Eastview Wildcats & Barrie North Vikings, however, which we chose because it was likely to be the closest game on the schedule, lived up to that expectation.

SCAA

Innisdale Invaders @ Collingwood Fighting Owls – Thursday, September 21

The Innisdale Invaders travelled to Collingwood last Thursday to open their season against the Collingwood Fighting Owls. It was the visitors who came ready to play, and spoiled the Owls’ party, and the Invaders took the victory by a score of 20-7. They will likely compete with Nantyr and Bear Creek for the top spot in the SCAA this season.

Orillia Nighthawks @ Banting Marauders – Thursday September 21

The Banting Marauders began their 2017 season in style with a convincing 29-6 win over the Orillia Nighthawks. This is a big win for the Marauders’ program in their first senior action in nearly two years after not fielding a program last season. Orillia is still in a rebuilding stage as they look to stock up on young talent.

CFC 50 Bear Creek Kodiaks @ Nantyr Shores Tritons – Friday, September 22

The CFC50 Bear Creek Kodiaks made the trip to Innisfil last Friday to take on the Nantyr Shores Tritons in a rematch of the 2016 SCAA Final. Bear Creek won that game 10-4, but this time around it was Nantyr getting some payback. The Kodiaks, who are expected to be near the top of the standings by season’s end, struggled to get anything going offensively, and the Tritons were able to capitalize. They cruised to a 24-8 victory, and have now won seven straight regular season games dating back to next year.

CFC GAME OF THE WEEK: Eastview Wildcats @ Barrie North Vikings – Friday, September 22

The Barrie North Vikings and Eastview Wildcats duelled it out on the newly-named J.C. Massey Field at Barrie’s Georgian College last Friday in the CFC Game of the Week.

It was a defensive affair from beginning to end. The Vikings led 3-0 after one on a field goal from David Corcoran, and wouldn’t score again. Eastview tied it in the second on a field goal of their own. Before the end of the half, they’d attempt another field goal. This one was missed, and went through the end zone for a rouge point, making it 4-3 Wildcats heading into the half. The only scoring in the 2nd half would be another single – this time off a punt – and that made the final 5-3 Eastview.

Vikings’ coach Burke Erwin said after the game that he was impressed with the way his defence played, holding the Wildcats offence scoreless. But, he said, his team needs to play harder in the coming weeks, and respond better when they’re behind. He felt they played “scared” on the field, and expects much better from his group moving forward.

SCAA Week 2 Schedule:

Collingwood Fighting Owls @ Eastview Wildcats (Georgian College) – Wednesday, September 27 (12:00 pm)
Nantyr Shores Tritons @ Innisdale Invaders – Thursday, September 28 (12:40 pm)
Banting Marauders @ CFC 50 Bear Creek Kodiaks – Thursday, September 28 (2:30 pm)
Barrie North Vikings @ Orillia Nighthawks – Friday, September 29 (2:30 pm)

CSASC

St. Theresa’s Thunder @ St. Joan of Arc Knights – Thursday, September 21

The St. Joan of Arc Knights began their season and quest to return to OFSAA with a convincing, 37-0, shutout victory over the St. Theresa’s Thunder on Thursday. The Knights led from the beginning to end, and truly showed their veteran savvy and leadership against a young, inexperienced Thunder team. JOA figures to be at the top of the totem pole in CSASC this season and compete for another trip to OFSAA, aiming to avenge a GBSSA Championship game defeat last year at the hands of the CFC 50 Bear Creek Kodiaks.

St Thomas Aquinas Stingers @ St. Joseph’s Jaguars – Friday, September 22
