High School Roundup (MB) [2]: Dakota Lancers improve to 2-0 over Oak Park

John Potter Division (AAA)

Garden City Gophers (7), Sturgeon Heights Huskies (35)
In the Huskies’ win over the Gophers, Simon Winsnes led his team with 5 receptions, 100 yards and 3 touchdowns, while on defense Simon added 5 tackles and one interception. Simon also punted the football for an average of 37 yards, and returned a punt for 16 yards.

At the end of the game the Huskies dominated with 343 total yards to Garden City’s 186. The Gophers put up 17 passing yards, while Sturgeon gained 211 yards in the air. After two weeks of football, CFC 100 lineman Kieran Cummings is tied for third in the WHSFL with 12 tackles.

Sisler Spartans (28), Steinbach Sabres (25)
The Sisler Spartans earned their first victory in a tight one against the Steinbach Sabres. Sisler scored the first touchdown to be up 7-0, but Steinbach answered counter touchdowns all the way up to 21-21. Eventually Steinbach was down 25-28 and attempted a hailmary pass to end the game, but came up short.

Steinbach’s Sawyer Thiessen was 11/20 for 146 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions before leaving the game in the third quarter with an injury. Tyler Bueckert had another big game with 5 tackles, 1 sack, and on offense Tyler added 5 carries for 70 yards, and 3 catches for 52 yards. Issac Dokken led the Sabres’ defense with 9 tackles and 1 sack.

Dakota Lancers (31), Oak Park Raiders (13)
The Oak Park Raiders were looking for their first victory of the season on homecoming weekend against the Dakota Lancers, but fell short 31-13.

Players of the Week

Offensive – Quarterback Liam Prendergast of the Sturgeon Heights Huskies went 11 for 21, with 3 touchdowns and added 9 carries for 28 yards and a touchdown in win against Garden City.

Defensive – Defensive end Chris Grouette from the Sisler Spartans earned 3 tackles and 3 sacks with 1 forced fumble in a victory over Steinbach.

Special Teams – Garden City’s punter/defensive back Josh Patterson had 8 punts for 308 yards (38.5 yard average), with a 95 yard punt and single in a loss to the Sturgeon Heights Huskies.

This week in the Potter Division…

The Steinbach Sabres have the bye week due to a forfeited game against Murdoch MacKay. #4 St. Paul’s Crusaders will be at Oak Park for a game against the Raiders on Thursday at 5:00pm and Garden City has a rival game against the Sisler Spartans on Thursday at 5:00pm at Nomads field.

Friday will see two big games in the Potter Division. The 2-0 Grant Park Pirates and 2-0 Sturgeon Heights Huskies meet at 5:00pm at Sturgeon, and the 2-0 Vincent Massey Trojans host the 2-0 Dakota Lancers at 5:00pm on Friday as well.

 

Kas Vidruk Division (AA)

Portage Collegiate Trojans (9), Crocus Plains Plainsmen (1)
The Portage Collegiate Trojans win their first game of the season against the Crocus Plains Plainsmen, 9-1. Both teams are 1-1 after this week’s contest.

St. Paul’s (12), Kelvin Clippers (42)
The Kelvin Clippers improve to 2-0, while the St. Paul’s Crusaders fall to 1-1 after this week’s game.

Quarterback Daniel Moroz threw for 424 yards and 5 TDs. Newcomer to the team, wide receiver, Taye Frazier, had 3 TDs and 195 yards receiving. Tryvian Daniels had 2 interceptions – turning one of them into a defensive touchdown.

Dryden Eagles (40), Elmwood Giants (0)
Dryden is 2-0 after their big win against the Elmwood Giants, 40-0. Elmwood is looking for their first win of the season at 0-2.

Neelin Spartans (40), Miles Mac Buckeyes (24)
The Neelin Spartans even up their record at 1-1. Miles Mac is 0-2 and still trying to get their first victory.

Vincent Massey Vikings (0), River East Kodiaks (21)
The River East Kodiaks earn the second shutout of the week in the Vidruk Division while defeating the Vincent Massey Vikings from Brandon, Manitoba.

Players of the Week

Offensive – Quarterback Daniel Moroz of the Kelvin Clippers set a new AAA/AA record passing for 424 yards on 29 attempts and 5 touchdowns. Moroz also added a 2 point conversion in a win over St. Paul’s.

Defensive – River East Kodiak’s Brenden Barylski earned defensive player of the week honors with his performance of 9 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception in a win over Vincent Massey.

Special – John Saville from the Neelin Spartans had 3 special team tackles , 2 assisted special team tackles, and a 112 yard missed field goal return for touchdown in a victory against Miles Mac.

What’s next in the Vidruk Division in week 3…

On Thursday, the Neelin Spartans will be in Portage La Prairie for a game against the Portage Collegiate Trojans at 4:30pm and Kelvin hosts the River East Kodiaks at 5:00pm.

Friday has three matchups in the Vidruk Division. Crocus Plains meets the Dryden Eagles in Dryden at 2:00pm, Miles Mac meets the Crusaders at St. Paul’s at 5:00pm and the Vincent Massey Vikings are in Winnipeg for a tilt against the Elmwood Giants.

 

Andy Currie Division (A)

Kildonan East Reivers (18), Daniel MacIntyre Maroons (35)
The Maroons are one of three teams in the Currie Division at 2-0, Kildonan East drops to 1-1.

Churchill Bulldogs (7), West Kildonan Wolverines (14)
West Kildonan evens up their record at 1-1, Churchill falls to 0-2.

St. John’s Tigers (23), Maples Marauders (7)
The St. John’s Tigers improve to 2-0 while defeating the 0-2 Maples Marauders. While rushing behind CFC 100 lineman Rain Slater, River Fontaine gained over 100 yards on the ground and scored 2 touchdowns.

Beaver Brae Broncos (36), Fort Frances Muskies (0)
The Beaver Brae Broncos shutout the Fort Frances Muskies to remain in a fight for the top spot in the Currie Division. The Muskies are 1-1.

Tec Voc Hornets (20), St. Norbert Celtics (17)
The Hornets even up their record at 1-1, St. Norbert remains winless.

Players of the Week

Offensive – Beaver Brae Bronco’s Chase Neufeld carried the football for 247 yards in a win over Fort Francis.

Defensive – Aaron Ross from the Tec Voc Hornets earned 7 tackles. 2.5 sacks and 1 fumble recovery in a victory against St. Norbert.

Special – Jarret Hicks of the Dryden Eagles scored an 83 yard kick return and a 102 yard punt return for td in the Eagles’ win against Elmwood.

Coming up this weekend…

On Thursday, Maples hosts Daniel Mac at 4:00pm, Kildonan East will meet Churchill for a game at 5:00 pm.

Friday the St. Norbert Celtics will travel to Kenora Ontario for a game against the Beaver Brae Broncos at 3:00pm. West Kildonan will also travel to Ontario for a game against the Fort Francis Muskies at 4:00pm.

The only Saturday game in the Currie Division will see the St. John’s Tigers matchup against the Tec Voc Hornets.
