This upcoming week marks the halfway point in the Saskatoon SSSAD high school football season and we are starting to see some very interesting stories unfold. First of all is that parity exists and is deep within Saskatoon High School Football with Holy Cross once again emerging as the initial front runner however the entire playoff race looks to be very exciting in both 3A and 4A play. The fight and physicality of all teams has been remarkable to start the year as it is apparent that the Saskatoon league continues to hold incredibly quality coached programs.

In the 4A division we are seeing some great games with 2 games already decided by one point. The Walter Murray Marauders squeaked by Prince Albert St. Mary’s Marauders with a 18-17 win and Centennial Chargers hung on against their rival St. Joseph Guardians with a 29-28 win both during week two play. The perennial 4A city champs Holy Cross Crusaders have yet to be challenged, easily dispatching Marion Graham (30-9), Aden Bowman (41-1), and Walter Murray (40-3) they will likely have their hands full when they see the likes of St. Joseph, a trip to North Battleford, Centennial and Bishop James Mahoney to round out their season. Aden Bowman had a great rebound, after a week 2 disappointment against Holy Cross, slowing the St. Joseph rushing attack and coming away with a 17-6 victory vs the Guardians. Prince Albert St. Mary’s and Bethlehem came away with their first wins It looks to be a very exciting finish to the season with only four teams making the 4A playoffs the race will really heat up in week 4.

In the 3A division it appears that anything can happen. The Bishop James Mahoney Saints and Marion Graham Falcons have been duking it out in a two-horse race for many years but the resurgence of the North Battleford Vikings, Tommy Douglas Tigers Team, the renewal of the Evan Hardy Souls, and introduction of back to back 9man provincial champion Warman Wolverines to 12-man football has made the four-team race for playoffs incredibly interesting. There is a 4-way tie for 1st place at the moment with the Saints, Vikings, Souls, and Tigers all with 2-1 records while the Marion Graham Falcons are in an unusual place at 0-3 after a tough schedule to start the season.

Senior SSSAD Offensive Standouts to start the season

QB Matthew Wilson (Holy Cross, SK) – 6’1/180 – One of the best dual threat QBs in the country that very few may know about. Due to an injury at the Canada Cup and playing a backup role to a senior in 2016. Matthew undoubtedly will continue to make his presence known throughout the season. Honorable Mention: Doug Flemming – BJM Saints Taran Prefontaine – Centennial Chargers Hayden Sabadash – Tommy Douglas Tigers.

RB Carter McLean (Evan Hardy, SK) – 5’9/180 – Carter has an incredible ability to make cuts at full speed and breakaway from defenders. He possesses great hands and plays with an incredibly high football intelligence. 9.7 rushing average and over 300 yards in 3 games.

RB Keagan White (St. Joseph, SK) – 6’1/185 -Keagan has gone off this year as the workhorse for the Guardians with over 20 touches a game and a 9.0 rushing average and over 340 yards in the first 2 games.

REC Adam Labrash (Walter Murray, SK) – 6’3/185 – Adam was a standout at the Canada Cup and continues to have success as the focal point of the Marauder Offense. His long body, soft hands, and his fluidity in and out of breaks puts him in a class by himself. Labrash continues to carry the bulk of the load on the Marauder Offense.

REC Noah Muench (Bishop James, SK) – 6’3/180 -Noah another tall smooth receiver is a great target for the Saints. Although he missed the season.

CFC100 OL Rodeem Brown (Centennial, SK) – 6’3/300 – Rodeem is in a class of his own as one of the best OL to come out of Saskatoon in years. A critical piece to the success of the Chargers offense; athletic is the best descriptor for this anchor of the Centennial OL who is excellent in both the run and pass game.
