Gryphons bring in South Lion LB

Guelph’s Class of 2017 grows by one.

When you don’t know anyone going into university, the ride can be a little rough. But, Dawson Elliott, an outside linebacker from the London South Collegiate Institute, already knows a few faces in the University of Guelph Gryphons’ locker room.

Elliott, who played with the London South Lions (Thames Valley Regional Athletics), said he chose Guelph for many reasons, one of which was because his good friends, such as Luke Williams and Joe Diorio, have already committed to the team. But, it won’t take long for Elliott to become close with his other teammates. “Guelph is smaller compared to other universities, (it has a) family-like feel,” he said.

The 5’11, 190lbs future Human Kinetics student added that he chose Guelph becomes of the great academics and athletics, as well as the coaching staff. “I absolutely love them already and I haven’t even begun the season. (They’re) all around fun, genuine guys who I am excited to play for,” the five-year veteran said of his new coaches.

Elliott didn’t start playing football until grade nine. Originally in hockey, his friends convinced him to switch sports. He was also a top scorer for the South Lions soccer team. In his football career, the product of London, Ontario has played with the London Junior Mustangs (OVFL) and the Forest City Thunderbirds. In 2014 and 2015, he was a defensive all-star with the Thunderbirds and the South Lions rookie of the year in 2015. The following year, he was athlete of the year and an OFSAA championship.

“I would like to thank Coach Stenning, Martin and Synder for always having my back and pushing me athletically and academically since I stepped into senior football,” Elliott said. “Also to my fifth year boys, Luke, Nick, Tyrell, Richie and Ethan, for always making the best memories together on and off the field.”

September may be a few months away, but Elliott is ready to start the next phase of his life. “I’m looking forward to rooming with one of my best friends and teammate Luke Williams and experiencing university together,” he said.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
