Moose Jaw is a special place. When you enter, there is a giant Moose statue to welcome you (and I mean giant). Actually, let’s just back that up and say that Saskatchewan is a special place where the passion for football is second to none. This weekend, you can get a taste of that passion as the CFC25 No. 21 Yorkton Raider Gridders take on the unranked Moose Jaw Peacock Tornadoes on Saturday at 1:00pm CT at Elks Field in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Senior offensive lineman (C), Josh Kidd, for the Raider Gridders said, “Yorkton and Moose Jaw Peacock is a special game because of the past history between the two teams. There was League championships in the past where Peacock was a very dominant team in our league and came out on top. So when it comes time to suit up against Peacock, it’s another chance for both teams to put their talent to the test”.

For those not familiar with these two teams, they met eachother in the first round of the 2018 playoffs where Yorkton beat Peacock 37-8 and ended the Tornadoes playoff dreams. Yorkton went on to the semifinals where they met CFC25 No. 2 Bishop James Mahoney and lost to them 22-15. BJM went on to win the 3A 12-man Provincial Championship.

Yorkton ended the 2018 season at 7-0 in the regular season with a +/- of 336 while Peacock finished 4-4 and a +/- (-) 62.

This season has started off vastly different for the Tornadoes. They are 2-1 and looking to pull the upset this weekend. Head coach of Yorkton, Bert Redstone said this is going to be a game where his offense and defense needs to focus and be prepared to execute against multiple looks.

Yorkton has a bunch of really good players and they come at you hard, on both O and D.  They also change things up, showing multiple defensive fronts, blitzes, zone and man so really for our offense it’s going to be recognizing what we’re running against and executing our plays,” he said. “Our defense faces the same problems, Yorkton uses a lot of misdirection and pre-snap movement to disguise where the ball is going.  Again for our defense it’s going to be important to find the ball and get after it.”

The Raider Gridders are going into this game with the message being clear that “they need to improve each week”. Head Coach, Roby Sharpe, more specifically mentions that “ball security” is going to be the keys to the game this weekend.

The X’s and O’s are just that, you need the athletes to execute those schemes in all phases of the game. For the Tornadoes, Coach Redstone points out a few key players to keep your eyes on.

“As for players we’re hoping to continue to have good showings from our QB Kyle Yamniuk and our tailback Kayde Shymko,” he said. “Our O line needs to be able to make blocks against the athletic defensive tackles of Yorkton so that’ll be on our center Kyle Duncan to recognize fronts pre snap.  Jude Tysdal has been solid for us on defense at safety and our two defensive ends Bryce and Devin Baumann will need to continue to play well in order for us to be successful against the run game.”

Coach Sharpe also mentions three players; Josh Haczkewicz, QB Connor Watrych, and Brad Heskin.

Hackewicz has got the “speed”, Watrych is the “brains’, and Heskin brings his “grit” to the team according to Sharpe.

Watrych knows that they can’t underestimate any of their opponents. “Peacock is coming off a massive win for their program on Friday night beating [MJ] Central. We know that we have to come in prepared to play our game and settle for nothing less than that,” he said.

The battle in the trenches is a very important one, and one that gives one team control of the line of scrimmage. Kidd mentions that Peacock has a talented offensive line unit and that his defense needs to be prepared to take on. “And their Defensive line also is a unit that our offensive line must be able to adapt to in order to be prepared for the game,” he added.

Controlling the LOS may be a bit of a challenge as RB/REC Noah Bymak said that they are missing a few key players both on the O and D-line, but he has confidence in his “family”.

“I think our mind set for this weekend is their team vs our family. We’re missing a few dudes on oline and dline…but we got dudes who will step up that’s why we’re a family. Everyone has to play their part so we can be successful,” Bymak said. He also recognizes that the Tornadoes have a strong offensive line and that it will be a “good battle in the trenches”.

However, it’s not all about the Tornadoes. Yorkton football is “physical football” according to Kidd. “We use speed to our advantage in a no huddle no mercy offence. Our physicality gives both our offence and defence an advantage and ability to be prepared for whatever is put up against us.”

Respecting their opponent at all times, Bymak mentions that “trash talk is cheap we show how hard we work through our play. #KFP.”

Every win means one step closer to playoffs and to lifting the trophy above your head as champions. Kidd said the he and his team are looking to finish with a ring. That is their overall goal, and one that they work towards every day.

We can already feel the anticipation and excitement building between these two teams. If the Tornadoes knock off the Raider Gridders, it will have surely been a tough one to pull off, but one that every team deems “so worth it”.

If you are in the area, look to the Moose, and get over to Elks Field in Moose Jaw. Kickoff is at 1:00pm CST on Saturday the 28th.
