Good week for Kingston, ON pro football players: Greenwood makes tackle for chiefs

It was a good week for several professional football players with Kingston ties.

In the National Football League, Regiopolis-Notre Dame graduate Cory Greenwood, a linebacker, made a tackle in his pro debut for the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night — a 20-10 loss against the Falcons in Atlanta.

The Chiefs travel to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers this coming Saturday.

In the Canadian Football League, meanwhile, several Kingston players played key roles in victories this week.

On Thursday in Regina, Queen’s/Frontenac graduate Rob Bagg had a game-high 81 receiving yards on seven catches as the Roughriders spanked the B.C. Lions 37-13. Also in that game, 2009 Queen’s star Shomari Williams made a couple of tackles for the Green Riders.

On Friday in Winnipeg, Queen’s/La Salle grad Matt Kirk had two sacks and three tackles for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a 39-28 win over the Blue Bombers.

On Saturday in Toronto, La Salle grad Taylor Robertson, an offensive lineman, and Queen’s grad Bryan Crawford, a running back and special teams captain, celebrated an eye-opening 37-22 victory for their Toronto Argonauts against the Montreal Alouettes.

Crawford ran for 42 yards on a direct snap on a fake punt, setting up a field goal. He also made a great open-field tackle on kick coverage as the surprising Argos (5-2) moved into a tie with the Als for first in the CFL East.
