Golden Hawks coaches want commits to succeed

Golden Hawks add four Ontario commits to their 2019 class.

CFC60 offensive lineman Quintin Cheevers from Bakersfield College and linebacker Elijah Szimanski from Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School are always seeking to improve their games and will do so next season with the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Fullback Nathan Brooks from AB Lucas Secondary School and linebacker Kaymmel Betancourt from Saltfleet District High School will also be joining the Golden Hawks.

CFC60 Quintin Cheevers

Quintin Cheevers found where he belongs. β€œI chose Laurier because it was the first place that felt like home to me,” he said. β€œI know the coaching staff is great and committed to making players not only better on the field but better men (as well).”

In his career, Cheevers, who is 6’4, 320lbs, has played for the Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs (BCSSAA), the RICC Knights, the Hamilton Hurricanes (OFC), the Brantford Bisons (OFC) and the Bakersfield Renegades.

Elijah Szimanski

Switching to university can be a challenge, but Elijah Szimanski is confident that he will have all the help he needs to make the transition. β€œI chose Laurier because on my visit there I really loved what they are doing with the program and how much they want you to try and achieve as much academically as much as they want you to succeed on the field,” said the potential kinesiology student.

Szimanski added that, β€œBill Parsons on the coaching staff is there to help make sure that you, as a player, are adjusting well academically and making sure your mental health is okay.”

As for the rest of the coaches, Szimanski said that they want you to achieve all the potential that a player has. They also want β€œto see the players move on and Laurier has produced some great CFL prospects, so they know how to do it.”

Szimanski, who is 6’2, 188lbs, has spent five seasons with the Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders (WCSSAA) and three with the Twin City Predators (OFC). He was a WCSSAA all-star in 2017 and 2018.

Nathan Brooks

Nathan Brooks has played for both the London Jr. Mustangs (OPFL) and the AB Lucas Vikings (TVRA). The 6’1, 225lbs fullback and defensive end is from London, Ontario.

Kaymmel Betancourt

Kaymmel Betancourt played with the Saltfleet Storm (HWIAC) in his hometown of Stoney Creek, Ontario. He is 5’11, 195lbs.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
