Golden Bears off to busy start, add 3

Golden Bears add one local commit and two Alberta commits to their 2019 class.

When linebacker Gabe Speerin from St. Josephā€™s Catholic High School looks at the University of Alberta Golden Bears, he likes what he sees in his future team.

Linebacker Connor Tywoniuk from Harry Ainlay High School and athlete Isiah Erskine from Centennial High School will also be joining the Golden Bears.

Gabe Speerin

When it comes to the Golden Bears, Gabe Speerin is confident that they have all the trappings to make him a better player. ā€œI chose UofA because they seem very dedicated to their players, (they) have a bright future and have a very good education program,ā€ he said.

ā€œThe universityā€™s coaching staff is fantastic,ā€ he added. ā€œEach of them is doing all they can to fulfill my needs and make sure Iā€™m happy.ā€

In his four-year career, Speerin has played with two teams, one of which was the St. Josephā€™s Celtics (NRMPC). He was the NRMPCā€™s linebacker of the year in 2017. He was also the Celticsā€™ defensive MVP and helped his team win a Peace Bowl last season. He captured a Horner Cup in 2015 and was also a team MVP that year.

The 6ā€™2, 195lbs outside linebacker is interested in either education or kinesiology. He is from Sexsmith, Alberta.

Connor Tywoniuk

Connor Tywoniuk is from Edmonton, Alberta, where he played with the Harry Ainlay Titans (MEHSFL) as a middle linebacker and fullback. He also spent a year with the Edmonton Chargers as an outside linebacker, middle linebacker and guard (CDMFA). In 2017, he was awarded the ā€œToughest Hitterā€ award by the Titans.

Isiah Erskine

Isiah Erksine is currently located in Calgary, Alberta. He was formally with the Bishop Oā€™Bryne Bobcats (CHSAA) before joining the Centennial Coyotes (CHSAA). He also played with the Calgary Bulldogs and Calgary Colts. Standing at 5ā€™11, 140lbs, he has suited up as a cornerback, wide receiver and free safety.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
