The Golden Bears football program has made an off-season addition to their coaching staff, as they have named Greg Knox their new Defensive Coordinator.
Knox recently served as the head coach and DC of the McMaster Marauders from 2016-2018, leading the Marauders to a 15-6 conference record and two post-season berths.
“I’m ecstatic; we are thrilled to have Greg join our program. I’ve known Greg since 1992 when we were drafted together. If I had to pick one guy in Canada I wanted to bring in to coordinate our defence, it’s Greg,” said Bears head coach Chris Morris.
“We have so many tremendous student-athletes, Academic All-Canadians, and leaders in our community. And those are all great, but we need to get better on Saturday afternoons. And Greg is a Saturday afternoon type of coach. This is a guy who is going to put our defence in the best possible position to win games.”

Knox served as the Marauders defensive coordinator from 2006-2014, helping McMaster reach three Vanier Cups (2011, 2012, and 2014), including winning their first national title in program history in 2011. He also spent one season as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive backs coach in 2015.
“I’m excited to join the Bears, and help these talented student-athletes become the best they can be, both on and off the field,” said Knox. “I’ve had the good fortune of being around a lot of good teams and coaches, and I’ve been able to leverage that experience, and add as much value as I can. There is a lot of talent on this team, and I’m looking forward to working with them.”
Knox played university football with the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks, winning a Vanier Cup in 1991.
He then played for seven seasons with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders as a starting free safety, where he became captain of the Stampeders defence. He won the Grey Cup with the Stampeders in 1992 and 1998 and was also a two-time CFL all-star.
In 1994, he was nominated for Outstanding Canadian Player in the CFL and for the Tom Pate Memorial Award which recognizes an outstanding player in the league for sportsmanship, dedication to the league, his club and community.
“I think this is a great day for Golden Bears football. We are bringing in somebody with tremendous experience, and I think he’s going to be a huge addition,” continued Morris. “I think his connections in the East are also going to be huge when it comes to recruiting. He has had success with a variety of teams and systems, and I think he’ll fit in perfectly with our program.”
