Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week 2012: CFL Week #1

TORONTO – Darian Durant, J.C Sherritt, Grant Shaw and Jon Cornish were named the Gibson’s Finest Players of the Week for week 1 of the 2012 Canadian Football League season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Darian Durant

QB – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders 43 @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats 16

Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant has been named the Offensive Player of the Week for week one of the 2012 season. Durant completed 25 of 34 passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns in the ‘Riders 43-16 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Durant also added to the Riders offence by running five times for a total of 33 yards.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week

J.C Sherritt

LB – Edmonton Eskimos

Toronto Argonauts 15 @ Edmonton Eskimos 19

J.C Sherritt was named the Defensive Player of the Week for his solid play in the Edmonton Eskimos 19-15 win over the Toronto Argonauts. Sherritt led all defensive players for both teams as he registered 11 tackles and forced one fumble on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium.

Grant Shaw

K – Edmonton Eskimos

Toronto Argonauts 15 @ Edmonton Eskimos 19

Sherritt was not the only Eskimo to be recognized for his play as kicker Grant Shaw was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. Shaw was reliable all evening as he was a perfect four-for-four on field goal attempts and also added an extra point as he contributed 13 overall points in the win.

Jon Cornish

RB – Calgary Stampeders

Montreal Alouettes 10 @ Calgary Stampeders 38

The top Canadian for week one was Calgary Stampeder running back Jon Cornish. Cornish was a key contributor in the Stampeders 38-10 win over the Montreal Alouettes, rushing for 86 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. The native of British Columbia also had three receptions for 28 yards.
