Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month for October 2012: Stamps, Bighill, Paredes and Cornish

TORONTO –Fred Stamps, Adam Bighill, Rene Paredes and Jon Cornish were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month for October, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month

Fred Stamps

SB -Edmonton Eskimos

Edmonton Eskimos slotback Fred Stamps was named the Offensive Player of the Month for October. Stamps compiled 585 yards and five touchdowns on 24 receptions in the last five games, including a 204-yard performance against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Stamps also added 11 yards on two carries for the Eskimos in the past five games.

With his impressive numbers, Stamps has been a key contributor in helping the Eskimos secure the final playoff spot. Stamps earned his first 2012 Player of the Month award

Adam Bighill

LB -BC Lions

BC Lions linebacker Adam Bighill was named the Defensive Player of the Month for October. Bighill registered 27 tackles, three special teams tackles, five sacks and one interception for the Lions in the past five games.

Bighill has been a leader in the league’s top defence and helped the Lions to a 4-1 record over the last five games. For his strong defensive play, Bighill earned his first 2012 Player of the Month award.

Rene Paredes

K -Calgary Stampeders

Calgary Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes was named the Special Teams Player of the Month for October. Paredes was a perfect 14/14 on field goal attempts and converted 14/14 extra points, contributing 56 total points to the Stampeders’ offence in the last five games.

Paredes has helped his team enter the playoffs as the hottest in the CFL, riding a four game win streak and having won four of their last five games. For his solid play, Paredes earned his first 2012 Special Teams Player of the Month award.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month

Jon Cornish

RB -Calgary Stampeders

Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Canadian Player of the Month for October. Cornish compiled 330 yards and two touchdowns on 74 carries and added 155 yards and one touchdown on 11 receptions for the Stampeders in the last five games.

With his 22-yard run late in the third quarter at Commonwealth Stadium, the New Westminster, BC native set a new single season CFL rushing record for Canadian players with 1,457 yards. On his last rush of the game, Cornish surpassed Normie Kwong who had held the record with 1,437 yards since 1956.
