Gee-Gees commits ready to bring their all

Gee-Gees add three out-of-province commits to their 2019 class.

Defensive backs Étienne Vandal and Hugo Laurent from Cégep Garneau, as well as quarterback Matt Mahler from the Okanagan Sun (CJFL), are looking to make their marks on the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Étienne Vandal

For Étienne Vandal, it was just the right time to join the University of Ottawa. “There are a lot of good defensive backs who are leaving, and I feel that the timing is good,” he said.

“I’ve decided to continue my career with the Gee-Gees because I feel that they can bring me something as much as I can bring them something,” Vandal added. “I feel like (it’s) home and I will be able to study in the program that I want.”

Standing at 5’10, 180lbs, he is interested in the nutrition program and the human kinetics program. Vandal, who is from Québec City, Québec, spent five years with Les Centaures de la Courvilloise (RSEQ) and three with Les Élans de Garneau (RSEQ Division 1).

Hugo Laurent

Hugo Laurent is also a member of Les Élans. In high school he played with Le Blizzard du Séminaire Saint-François (RSEQ) in his hometown of Québec City.

Matt Mahler

Matt Mahler will be flying in from Okanagan where he currently plays with the Okanagan Sun. In seven regular season games in 2018, he had 54 completions on 130 attempts with a completion percentage of 41.5. He had 736 yards averaging 5.7 yards an attempt and had 105.1 passing yards. He scored five touchdowns and had five interceptions. In the two playoff games he played, he had 22 completions on 48 attempts with a 45.8% completion rate. He had 298 yards, averaging 6.2 yards, and had 149 passing yards. He scored two touchdowns and had two interceptions.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
