Gaiters notch Homecoming win over No. 10-ranked Axemen

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Fifth-year quarterback Jesse Andrews (Pickering, Ont. – picture) threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Bishop’s Gaiters downed the No. 10-ranked Acadia Axemen 31-16 in CIS football action today at Coulter Field. A Homecoming crowd of 2,179 saw the Gaiters score 18 points in the second quarter as they took a 21-1 halftime lead and cruised to the win.

Andrews found David Haddrall (Kingston, Ont.) for a 23-yard touchdown at 3:20 of the second quarter, to put the Gaiters up 10-1, and the quarterback’s 15-yard run at 11:25 extended the margin to 20-1.

Fourth-year kicker Josh Maveety (Kingston, Ont.) scored the Gaiters’ other touchdown on a fake field goal in the third quarter, as he took a lateral from Olivier Mongeau (Sorel, Que.) and scampered 15 yards into the end zone. Maveety scored a career-high 19 points, as he was good on field goals from 33, 28 and 38 yards, made three conversions and added a 79-yard kickoff single.

After falling behind 31-1 after three quarters, the Axemen used the wind advantage to score 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, as A.J. Durling caught a 33-yard pass from Kyle Graves at 3:16, and Matt Archibald added a pair of field goals to go with his first-quarter single. A safety touch rounded out Acadia’s scoring.

Andrews went 18-for-29 for 219 yards and a touchdown and ran seven times for 52 yards and a touchdown before being pulled from the game early in the fourth quarter. John Jean-Baptiste (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Gaiters’ rushers with 11 carries for 80 yards. Haddrall led the Gaiters’ receivers with four catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.

For Acadia, Greaves was 15-for-24 with three interceptions and a touchdown, and was also the leading rusher for the Axemen, with 12 carries for 61 yards. Durling was Acadia’s leading receiver, with six catches for 61 yards, including a touchdown.

The Gaiters gained 432 yards to Acadia’s 259, and made 30 first downs, to Acadia’s 18. The Gaiters caused four Acadia turnovers, while only giving up the ball twice. Bishop’s was whistled for 20 penalties, for 205 yards, while Acadia was flagged six times for 65 yards.

Acadia’s (1-0) next game is next Saturday, when they will host the St. F.X. X-Men. Bishop’s (2-1) is also back in action on Saturday as they visit the Concordia Stingers. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., and the game will be carried live on Radio-Canada, the French television service of the CBC.

NOTES: The Gaiters now lead the all-time series 3-2, with wins in the last two games … The Gaiters are now 7-9 vs. AUS teams, 5-7 since the introduction of the interlock in 2002 … John Jean-Baptiste’s 80 rushing yards are a career high … The Gaiters have gone 5-6 against ranked teams since 2008.
