From Nigeria to Halas, Idonije makes workout

Newly anointed defensive end Israel Idonije wasn’t the first player to report when the Bears started their voluntary workout program Monday morning, but Idonije found his way to Halas Hall by the afternoon.

Idonije told the Tribune he arrived at 1 p.m. after returning to the states from his native Nigeria at 10 a.m. Idonije was on his annual C.A.R.E mission..

You can read about his trip at israelidonije.org.

Bears coach Lovie Smith announced last week that Idonije would play defensive end exclusively rather than tackle and end, as he did last season. The Bears are shopping starting right end Alex Brown, but might end up releasing the veteran. That leaves Julius Peppers and probably Mark Anderson as the starters, with Idonije as a key reserve.
“I’ll be ready to play whatever they need me to play,” Idonije said. “My motto has always been expect nothing, be ready for anything.”
Idonije weighed 306 pounds two years ago as the Bears wanted him to focus on defensive tackle. He dropped 30-plus pounds before last season and expects to report to camp this year between 260-265 pounds.
