Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): LS Werner attributes experienced coaching to a positive football experience

At 5’8, 225lbs, lineman Zach Werner doesn’t let his size bother him. He looks up to Angus Reid from the BC Lions who was also considered small for a lineman. “[his] ability to exceed in the game means work ethic and dedication proves more important,” states Werner.Β

Having played for 8 years now, Zach has come up through the Handsworth Royals and the GSL football programs. Currently, he is a member of the Handsworth Royals varsity team. His experience in these programs has been largely positive. He says that he has been fortunate enough to have been on the receiving end of knowledgeable and experience coaching which has helped him strive forward in his career.

This transfer of information and instruction has allowed for Werner to have some focused goals going forward. For the FPC he says, “My goals for the CFCFPC are to see how my knowledge and skills compare to other top players in the province. I would also have the opportunity gain valuable experience from these elite coaches as well as other players in my positions.”

And while the FPC isn’t the only goal on his list for his graduating year, he also has his eyes on the CFC100 list and says it would be a “great honour” to get on, but doesn’t see it as a priority in for him at this point in his career.

“To be listed on the CFC 100 would be a great honour although, at this point in my career it is not a priority for me as I understand there is strong competition for the list,” he reflects.Β

Zach, instead, is focusing on attending multiple QB/Lineman camps as he has done in the past where he was coached by Angus Reid, Jay Prepchuk, and current NFLer, Adam Bighill. He goes on to say that in addition to working on his football skill, he will be be participating in a four day per week training regime and in the spring, he volunteers as an assistant coach for the bantam Handsworth Royals.

He finishes by saying this about his love of football, “I love to play football because of the necessity of all team members to function as a whole to succeed, which fosters a strong team connection.”
