Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): Kelowna Owl, Zakala, using football for so much more

Football has been known to produce many incredible athletes, but it has also produced many great men. Tight end, Kyle Zakala from the Kelowna Owls has big goals to one day be one of these great men.

He was inspired by the biography of Walter Payton, “Sweetness”, and says that if he ever made it to the NFL, he hopes to win the Walter Payton award for his contributions on and off the field. Kyle goes on to say, “I admire how even know he went to a small University being Jackson State he because one of the greatest and more influential football players ever.”

The 6’6, 240lbs athlete loves football because there are many opportunities that can give you options in life, such as getting an education, meeting new people, and travelling to different places. Kyle hopes to use the CFCFPC to accomplish many of these goals. “My Goals for the CFCFPC is to showcase my football ability and meet football coaches and players from all over the province and hopefully country.” he says.

Currently, Kyle plays for the Kelowna Owls, but has also been a three time member of Team BC. He has won the Owls Rookie of the Year, and been team captain for the Kelowna Lions from 2011-2014. This year he had 10 receptions for 191 yards.

And while eight years may seem like a long time to be playing a sport at this young age, Zakala continues to have big goals. Graduating in 2018, he has made it his goal to get on the CFC100 list, but more specifically, be in the top ten. He will be working out in the school gym everyday of the week and speed training at least twice a week in order for him to accomplish this goal.

His football experience to date doesn’t stop with these focused goals. He goes on to say, “I can’t even tell you how many coaches I have met or how many coaches have coached me, I have been on many Elite football teams with great coaches and I have been to 2 SFU camps and been to a UBC camp which obviously had great coaching.”

Great coaching and mentoring leads to great athletes being produced and Kyle Zakala is an example of that already.
