Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (Central): DB Sogon, Malcolm Butler’s reincarnation

Loic Sogon begun playing football later than most people, but in his shorter career he has covered more ground than anybody else through hard work and confidence.

Most people start playing football when they turn 10-11 years old, but Sogon did not begin his career until he was 14 years old. However, it has not shaken his confidence one bit.

Sogon began playing football at 14, because his “high school never had a football team,” he says, so he joined the Etobicoke Eagles in the OVFL.

Some people play sports for popularity, but “I love football for the sense of family and belonging,” adds Sogon, who extends on the subject saying it is a feeling he gets “when I play with any team of guys who have the same passion and love for the sport that I play.”

The Eagles defensive back has found an idol in which he sees himself, and perhaps, even enjoy as successful a career as his idol. Sogon’s football idol is New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, because “he was a hardly known athlete a few years ago with a lot of potential who showed everyone what he could do with that game winning interception in Super Bowl 49,” says Sogon.

Much like Malcolm Butler, in order to be invited at the big dance, Sogon works that much harder than most players. During the offseason, he lifts before school starts. “I train at 7am in the weight room at my school before class starts with my gym teacher who was a professional athlete in volleyball,” says Sogon, “he shows me all the different ways I can work on important muscles I need to play football.”

Sogon’s goal for the CFCFPC is “for a chance to play football in university next year.”
