Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): ATH Spencer, “football is in my blood”

Following in the footsteps of his father, Kelowna Owl, Lucus Spencer says that “football is in his blood.”

My dad played CJFL for the Okanagan Sun  as well as  my Uncle.  He attended Concordia University and played for the Concordia Stingers before being drafted to the CFL.  I live, eat and breath football.  I love everything about the game.  From the training, to watching film, I’m always looking looking to improve my skills.”

The FPC is a great way to showcase and improve football skill and Lucus says his goals are “endless”. He wants to be a professional football ball player, but in the meantime is working on his GPA and focusing on playing at a university in Canada or the States.

Playing for four years now, Spencer only played two years for the junior bantam community football league before being invited to play for the Kelowna Owls junior varsity team. This past year, he played on both the junior varsity and the varsity team. He says, “Playing on both KSS teams this past season helped me evolve as player both offensively and defensively as I was moved around both sides of the ball.”

During the off-season, the 6’2, 200lbs athlete will be playing flag football to keep up with his conditioning in the spring and summer months, but also uses hockey in the winter to keep up his endurance and strength. In addition to playing multiple sports, he works with a conditioning coach to make sure that he gets the proper preparation for the season.

And while he works on the physical aspect of his game, he also looks up to NFL player, Odell Bechkam Jr. of the New York Giants. “he’s a phenomenal athlete who’s great with his hands, has unbelievable speed and an amazing route runner.” he says. “He’s put under extreme pressure and has a lot of hype surrounding him and he doesn’t get distracted by any of it and stays focused on mastering his skills.”

To having a passion for football from his Dad, to looking ahead to the pro’s for inspiration and motivation, Lucus is willing to do the leg work now to accomplish his goals for the future.
