Fox 40 Prospect Challege (Central): Lineman, Lightbody, ready to show what he’s got

Michael Lightbody has been playing football for seven years, and his experience has been nothing short of incredible.

“I’ve had great support through my parents and coaches,” said Michael. “It’s had its ups and downs with a couple of championships along the way.”

His favourite memory is meeting and becoming friends with lots of people, followed by his A-Cup Championship win.

Michael enjoys any position and has played pretty much every position on the offensive and defensive lines, aside from left tackle. Most recently, he has played as a centre and a fullback for his high school team, the Arnprior Redmen in the Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletic Association (UOVHSAA).

“I have so far loved all coaches and my teammates even with the team merge this year with us,” explained the Redman in regards to the West Carleton Wolverines and Rideau Redblacks merge in the National Capital Amateur Football League (NCAFA).

In the past, he has also played with the Beckwith Irish.

Currently, Michael is a part of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) with the Myers Riders.

During his career, the Redman has won the Best Defensive Lineman award twice, Best Offensive Lineman once and 3D Offensive Player of the Year. He was also awarded Lineman of the Year the past two years for his high school team.

The lineman is participating in this year’s Fox 40 Prospect Challenge and would like to make the team so he can compete against some of the best in Ontario.

“I want a shot to show everyone what I can do,” commented Michael. “I would like to get scouted so I can play at a university and hopefully play football beyond school.”

The offseason for Michael consists of lifting weights and watching what he eats. He is also on the basketball team, which helps with his endurance and speed.

His football role model is Russell Wilson because he is genuinely a nice person, for example, he visits children in hospitals. Wilson also proved size does not matter and Michael admires his ability to make something out of nothing on any given plan.

Michael loves football because he loves to hit and be physical.

“It’s always been fun winning or losing,” said the Redman. “All the memories that its made, all the highs and lows, everything about it I love.”

He also loves beating the guy across from him.

“I have not really played any skill position,” added Michael, “I’ve always been on the line and it’s a battle every down and I love it.”

“It’s really awesome when you can line up the perfect hit and destroy someone, but I just love the sport.”
