Former Argo Simmons to join Axemen in Fall

Acadia Football Head Coach Jeff Cummins announces Marcello Simmons to join staff for 2010 Season

WOLFVILLE, NS – Acadia University Football head coach Jeff Cummins is please to announce the addition of former Toronto Argonaut Special teams coordinator Marcello Simmons to his 2010 coaching staff.

Simmons, who assisted the Axemen last season in training camp as a linebacker coach and this past winter as a defensive back coach, will bring a wealth of experience to this year’s staff compliment in the defensive backfield.

Simmons, a former defensive back from Southern Methodist University played two seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars respectively and seven seasons in the CFL, wrapping up his career in Toronto. Marcello joined the Argos coaching staff immediately following his playing career in 2003 as the Argos Special Teams Coordinator.

While under his guidance, the Boatmen have ruled the annual CFL awards and all-star balloting. In the past five seasons, Toronto players have led the CFL by filling nine special teams positions on the East Division all-star team, four spots on the CFL all-star team and four players have represented the East Division at the annual CFL Outstanding Player awards. Under the guidance of Simmons, Bashir Levingston became the first Argo player to be nominated for, and win, the CFL’s Outstanding Special Teams Player Award in 2003.

Cummins is thrilled to have Marcello back this season, playing an important role with the defensive backfield and special teams. “Marcello adds a fresh professional perspective to our defense, special teams and staff. We have been friends for 15 years now and Argo team mates back in 1995. I guarantee his influence on our players will bring positive results on the field and off. I am really excited to have such a great coach and friend to help us get back to our championship ways”.

The Axemen open up the season on Saturday, September 12 at home in Wolfville against the defending AUS Champion Saint Mary’s Huskies followed by their second game of the regular season in Lennoxville, QC against the Bishop Gaiters.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
