Football BC mourns passing of Carey Lapa


Football BC would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of Carey Lapa, who passed away suddenly on Sunday from a heart attack.

Lapa left his mark on the amateur football scene in BC as a player, coach and administrator. He played for the UBC Thunderbirds from 1982 to 1985 and was a member of the undefeated 1982 Vanier Cup winning squad. He also earned Western Conference all-star status in 1985. He served as a coach with the Kamloops Red Devils in the late 80’s before moving to Port Coquitlam and coaching the Terry Fox Ravens. He was the head coach of the Junior Varsity team at the time of his passing and had taught physical education at Terry Fox Secondary since 1998.

Carey also served as the president of the BC High School Football Association from 1998 to 2000. He is survived by his mother, Erna, and his brother, Kent. He is predeceased by his brother, Kevin, and father, Andrew.

Terry Fox Secondary School will to creating a football award or bursary in his name. The school will also be holding a celebration of his life on Saturday, February 5 at 1:00 pm in the school gym.

A funeral for Carey will take place on Saturday, January 22 in Kamloops. Exact details will be made available as soon as we receive further information.
