#CFC100 Sambu commits to Dinos, plus 2 others

Three Calgary-area commits are now members of the Dinos

The Calgary Dinos have added some size to both their offense and defense as three new local recruits joined their ranks over what was a busy weekend for the team.

#CFC100 Justin Sambu, a defensive end from Cochrane High School, Kane Boklaschuk, a running back from Cochrane High School, and Daniel Teitz, a linebacker from Springbank Community High School, signed their letters of intent on Saturday.

Since Sambu calls Cochrane, Alberta his hometown, one of the reasons why he committed to the Dinos was because of its proximity. β€œIt is the home team, great football school with great coaches and I want to win a national championship with the Dinos,” he said. β€œI think that the Dinos look great. They look like a very fast paced, athletic team.”

It didn’t take long for the young football player to take a shine to the coaches. He had nothing but praise for his new coaching staff. β€œVery good coaching from very nice and good coaches that I know will take care of me,” he said.

Sambu, who stands at 6’3, 265lbs, has played with the Cochrane High School Cobras (Alberta Schools Athletic Association). He was part of the Cobras team that won their second consecutive ASAA Tier 3 Football Provincial Championship last season.

In 2015, he played with U18 Team Alberta in the Canada Cup. In 2016, he competed in the International Bowl with Team Canada and the Alberta Senior Bowl with Team South and won both championships.

Matt Berry, the recruiting coordinator, defensive line coach and the co-defensive coordinator for the Dinos, said that, “Justin is going to have a chance to compete for playing time very early in his CIS career. He is a very talent young man that shows exceptional athleticism for a guy his size.”

Kane Boklaschuk, who also hails from Cochrane, will know at least one face on the Dinos team as he has also played with the Cobras. The running back is a towering 6’2, 210lbs.

“I chose the University of Calgary because it’s close to home and family. They appeal of U of C is the that the Dinos have a winning program that really helps progress players both academically and on the field,” he said.

“The Dinos are one of the top schools in the nation. They play very fast and physical, which leads them to win games. All of the staff, down to the trainers, are committed to the program and winning, which is great to see. Their attention to detail is very admirable,” he added.

Along with Sambu, Boklaschuk helped his team win the 2015 Alberta Bowl vs. the Holy Rosary Raiders in the ASAA Tier 3 Championship. He also won the championship with the Cobras in 2014. Along with playing for the Cobras, he has also been a member of the Cochrane Lions at both the peewee (Calgary Peewee Football Association) and bantam level (Calgary Bantam Football Association). He has been playing football for nine years, starting at the age of eight. He is currently looking into the economics program at the U of C.

Coach Berry had nothing but praise for the team’s new running back. “Kane is a big, strong and tough ball carrier. He is a young man that will find a role in our offence and on special teams. There is an edge to this kid and that is something that can develop into something special for us.”

Teitz, who calls Calgary his home, is 6’0, 208lbs, has played football since grade seven, however he only started taking it seriously in grade nine.

“I chose to commit to the University of Calgary because they are always a top contender in the playoffs. My older brother, Micah Teitz, plays on the team as well, which has led me to become familiar with the coaches and the program over the years. It is also nice and close to home, which is nice,” he said.

“I think the Dinos have a great football culture and a winning attitude. The Dinos are having another great season and have a really great defence,” Teitz added, giving a little insight into his new team.

While Teitz was already familiar with the coaching staff, he was able to work with their linebacker coach this summer when he played with U18 Team Alberta. “The Dinos obviously have a great coaching staff with Head Coach Wayne Harris winning coach of the year, as well as the new defensive coordinator, Tom Higgins, who has experience coaching with the pros,” he said.

The young linebacker added that, “I am very excited to be able to work with them.”

Teitz has played one season with the with the Calgary Midget Falcons, (Calgary Area Midget Football Association) and two seasons with Cochrane Midget Lions (CAMFA). He won two midget all-stars in 2015 and 2016. He has also been a member of the Springbank High Phoenix (ASAA) and played two times with U18 Team Alberta. He was named the defensive MVP in the 2016 Football Cup during the Alberta-Quebec game. Last season, he won linebacker MVP for the Rocky View League. He is interested in taking kinesiology.

When Teitz enters the Dinos locker room, there will be one familiar face amongst the crowd. His older brother, Micah, is entering his third season with the Dinos this year and also plays defense. Micah told the Rocky View Weekly that he has always wanted to play football with his brothers, but wasn’t able to due to an age gap. He added, β€œThe idea of having two Teitz playing in the middle (of the Dinos defence) is an exciting one.”

“The addition of Daniel Teitz to our linebacker group will provide great depth for our future. He is a very hard working and dedicated young man who leads by his effort and desire to win. Daniel is an exceptional open-field tackler and has the ability to play multiple linebacker spots,” Coach Berry said.

“With our team having a very senior group of defensive linemen, this is a great time for a talented, young defensive linemen to join our team,” Coach Berry added. “It is the effort of my our entire staff, our alumni and our academic coordinator Cyndie Baum that helped these young men to choose University of Calgary for their academic and football future.”
