Dinos ‘aren’t just a team,’ says commit

Dinos bring in three local commits to their Class of 2018.

Whether it be at practice or during a game, when Zachary Xavier, a defensive end from William Aberhart High School, lines up with the University of Calgary Dinos, he knows he will have to bring everything he has at each and every moment.

Linebacker Parker Smith from St. Francis High School and lineman Martin Levkovski from Henry Wise Wood High School will also be joining the Dinos next fall.

Each team has its own specific feel. When Zachary Xavier attended a Dinos practice, he said it was the environment that amazed him. “They aren’t just a team,” he said. “They’re a family where they have fun but also go hard every play and get the job done. They have a very good football program.”

Originating from Calgary, Alberta, himself, Xavier knows that there will always be a bit more pressure playing for the hometown team. “The expectations are high, which helps you get better every time you go to practice,” he said.

“The coaching staff were very friendly and welcoming,” the 5’11, 230lbs athlete added. “They made me feel like apart of the team even before I signed with them.”

Xavier, who is interested in engineering, started football in grade nine with the Calgary Cowboys (Calgary Bantam Football Association) where he played as an offensive lineman. When he joined the Midget Cowboys, he switched to the defensive side of the ball. He currently plays with the William Aberhart Trojans (Calgary High School Athletic Association). In 2016 and 2017, he was named to the midget all-star team. Last year, he won the Trojans’ best defensive lineman award.

Parker Smith
Parker Smith, who also calls Calgary his home, said he chose the Dinos because “it’s close to home and full of hard working players. I’m really excited to be apart of the organization.”

When it comes to the coaches, Parker said, “I’ve heard nothing but good things and that was confirmed when I was able to sit down with them.”

Parker currently plays for the St. Francis Browns (CHSAA). He has played with the Calgary Mavericks and the Calgary Selects. He was a linebacker on the 2017 edition of Team Alberta U18. The team played in the Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, in July. He stands at 6’1, 185lbs. In 2016, he won a provincial championship.

Martin Levkovski
Martin Levkovski, who is 6’1, 250lbs, spent his high school career with the Henry Wise Wood Warriors (CHSAA). The product of Calgary also suited up for Team Alberta U18 this past summer. For his city team, he suited up for the Calgary Bulldogs. The former all-star also participated in the 2015 Bantam Bowl at the Alberta Summer Games.
