Edmonton & Ottawa defensive standouts newest recruits to join AUS team’s 2014 class.

Two defensive standouts are moving to Nova Scotia for the next chapter of their gridiron career.

Recently, Sam Badre and Brad Herbst committed to the Saint Maryā€™s Huskies.Ā  Both recruits will join the team for the 2014 AUS season.

SAM BADRE:

Since his official visit to the Halifax, Nova Scotia campus last year, the 6ā€™2, 212 pound defensive back from Edmonton, Alberta knew it was the right fit for him and liked the tradition and reputation the football program has enjoyed throughout the years.

ā€œI decided to commit to Saint Mary’s because of their track record in sending players to the CFL,ā€ explained Badre of his decision. ā€œI went on a recruiting trip to Halifax to meet with (Head Coach) Perry Marchese last year and instantly knew that I wanted to be playing for Saint Mary’s.ā€

ā€œSince my recruiting trip, I made and kept a lot of friends from the team and I’m excited to meet up with them again. Ā I’m excited to be joining a defensive back core who I believe I can learn a lot from.ā€

Additionally, there is a special personal reason why he is going to make the Huskies his home for the next few years.

ā€œAnother reason why I wanted to go was because I was following in the footsteps of my brother’s best friend, Jeff Hecht (Calgary Stampeders/Edmonton Wildcats),ā€ added Badre.

The defensive back joins the Huskies after playing this past season with the Edmonton Huskies of the Prairie Football Conference (PFC) in the Canadian Junior Football Conference (CJFL). Previous to Huskies, Badre suited up for PFC rivals Edmonton Wildcats.

As a late bloomer in game, the Alberta standout began his career in 2011 at the age of 20, but turned an unfortunate circumstance as a source of motivation when it came to continuing his gridiron career.

ā€œI never had any intent on playing football as I was trying out for the Wildcats as a bet with my best friend,ā€ recalled Badre.Ā  ā€œHe told me that soccer (which I played at the time) was for girls and I told him that I bet I could play make his football team.ā€

ā€œUnfortunately during winter workouts with the Wildcats, my best friend was killed and I decided to continue on in memory of him.ā€

As for the Huskies, the team is thrilled to welcome Badre into the fold.

ā€œWe are very happy to have Sam join us at Saint Mary’s,ā€ commented Huskies Head Coach Perry Marchese.Ā  ā€œHe is a great addition to the family.”

Brad Herbst

BRAD HERBST:

The 6ā€™0, 215 pound linebacker from Ottawa, Ontario guided the Ottawa Myers Riders of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) to the varsity league championship in 2013.Ā  For his exceptional play on the field, Herbst was named Defensive MVP of the game.

Furthermore, he has suited up for the Ottawa Jr Riders of the Quebec Junior Football League (QJFL) and both the West Carleton Wolverines and the Kanata Knights of the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA).

ā€œWe are very happy to have Brad join us at Saint Mary’s,ā€ added Marchese.Ā  ā€œHe is a great addition to the family.”
