Cory Greenwood gets offer from NFLs Chiefs


MONTREAL – The Kansas City Chiefs announced the signing of rookie free agent Cory Greenwood, a highly-accomplished linebacker with the Concordia Stingers.

The Kingston, Ont. native worked out for the NFL team yesterday and signed this morning. He is currently in Kansas City taking part in Organized Team Activities (OTA).

Greenwood is the second Stinger to sign with an NFL team this spring. Offensive tackle Kristian Matte reached an agreement with the Houston Texans on April 24.

The two join a long list of Stingers who have enjoyed the attention of NFL teams, including cornerback Mark Montreuil who was drafted in the seventh round by the San Diego in 1995. He went on to play three years.

Other free agent signing include: WR Denis Montana, Houston Oilers, 1996; WR Sylvain Girard, Cleveland Browns, 1999; punter Burke Dales, Pittsburgh Steeler, 2002; and NT Sam Taulealea, Dallas Cowboys, 2006.

As well linebacker Mickey Donovan had a tryout with the Detroit Lions in 2004.

In Greenwood’s final year at Concordia, the Human Environment major collected 62 total tackles in eight games to lead the Quebec University Football League in tackling. His 52 solo tackles and 20 assists ranked him fourth in the country. He also collected two sacks and forced a fumble.

He is one of hardest working athletes to ever wear the Stingers’ uniform. Greenwood is in superb physical condition and has earned a lot of respect for his devotion to training. At 235 pounds, he can do an amazing 24 reps at 225 pounds on bench press. Greenwood also has an exceptional vertical leap that is now at 40 inches. He runs a 4.50 40-yard dash.

In 2009, he was a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) first team all-Canadian and the Presidents Trophy recipient as the outstanding defensive player in Canada. He was also Concordia’s Male Athlete of the Year.

On May 2, he was selected third overall by the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League draft.
