Cornwall hangs in with high flying Eagles (Varsity – OVFL)

ETOBICOKE – On a regionally televised game, the visiting expansion team from Cornwall held in with the high flying Eagles of Etobicoke. The Eagles employed a spread offense which saw some great plays at all offensive positions. Not to be out done, the Wildcats of Cornwall employed a ball possession offense and a bend-don’t-break defense that was successful until the late stages of the game.

The home squad appeared to have opened the scoring at 9:17 of the game when #80, Aaron Jeremiah caught a TD from QB, #6 Jesse herman but the play was nullified by a holding penalty. The Eagles ended up settling for a 24 yard field goal by #1, Kee Joon Chung, to take the lead at 3 to 0. The Eagles went up 10 to 0 on a great screen pass and run by #5, Melvin Abankwah, for 40 yards (Chung convert).

Early in the second quarter the visitors scored a rushing touchdown by #35, Jason Leduc. The convert attempt was unsuccessful. At the 3:49 mark, the Eagles responded with a 21 yard TD reception by Jeremiah, making the score 16 to 6 (convert unsuccessful). At 1:55 the Eagles fumbled the ball and the Wildcats recovered. The Wildcats drove the ball deep into Eagle territory only to have the ball picked off at the one yard line…a very important turn of events. 16 to 6 Halftime score.

One crucial play in the second half that hurt the Wildcats was a bad snap on a punt which saw the Eagles take over deep in Cornwall territory. The bad snap was on last play of 3rd quarter, when the score was still 16 to 6.

The fourth quarter saw the home team gain the momentum and score 17 unanswered points. A 17 yard field goal by Chung as well as TDs by Abakwah (on a spectacular 37 yard run) and #88, Llevi Noel.
