Concordia coach McGrath announces six football commitments

Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath is pleased to announce six players who have committed to playing football for the Stingers starting in the 2011 season.

The push to build an extraordinary offensive line for the future continues to make significant progress with the addition of Kyle Crisp, a highly sought-after tackle from Northern Secondary School in Toronto. The six-foot-seven, 280-pound student is a Greater Toronto Area all-star.

Two athletes with from Ottawa-area football will join the Stingers. John Funston, an Ottawa high school all-star from perennial powerhouse Ashbury College, will bring his successful slashing style to Montreal. The tailback checks in at five foot 11 and 185 pounds. Joining him will be Pierre-Nicholas Konan, a Montrealer who suited up for the Ottawa Sooners in the junior ranks. At six foot three and 320 pounds, the defensive tackle will be a force up the middle.

Three Quebec CEGEP students will wear maroon and gold next season. Linebacker Chris Oā€™Kill McMullen from the provincial AAA champion Vanier Cheetahs brings his physical game to Concordia.

ā€œWe feel he is the best strong-side linebacker coming out of Quebec this year,ā€ McGrath says of the six-foot-three, 220-pound LaSalle, Que. native.

Finally, two accomplished athletes from John Abbott College began classes at Concordia this month: defensive end Ryan Hobbs of Brockville, Ont. and defensive back Vince Nardone of Rosemere, Que.

At six foot three, 255 pounds, Hobbs has considerable size for an end. Nardone checks in at five foot 11 and 185 pounds.

ā€œI am very pleased with where we are in the recruiting process,ā€ says McGrath. ā€œWeā€™re not after a whole lot this year. We have specific needs and are working hard to fill them. We are going into spring camp with about 80 bodies and we usually have 50-60. Weā€™re looking at going to training camp in August with more than 90 players.ā€

McGrath and his team of coaches continue to pursue several top prospects and plan to have more commitments to announce in the next few weeks.
