Offensive Line

Teams:
West Kildonan Wolverines
Team Manitoba
North Winnipeg Nomads

Commitment: Manitoba

Mitchell’s first season with the Nomads he played strong side middle linebacker and was awarded ‘best defensive lineman’ for his efforts. He played two more seasons with the Nomads, playing a variety of positions including defensive end and full back. He liked playing football because of how unique the sport was including the dependency on all players to play well and how fun it was to make plays and celebrate with his teammates.

After playing for the Nomads he started playing for his high school (West Kildonan) in his freshman year. He started that season at right guard and played a little defensive line as well. He played two more seasons with the Wolverines, both were winning seasons, and one of them was a championship year. Mitchell had a great grade 12 year (2010) where he was the Kas Vidruk Lineman Award (Vidruk East) as well as:
– Elite Performances Defensive Award (Vidruk East)
– Darcy Bain/ John Potter Bursary Nomintion (Vidruk East)
– Home Run Sports All Division Team Offence (Vidruk East)

His most memorable football experience was the championship season with West Kildonan. An inspirational speech during the off season by team captain Kurt Goodrich set things in motion for a great year. “From that point on you could tell that our team had that fire to win and we showed every team how bad we wanted those rings. We finished the season 7-0 and fought to the championship game to face our rivals the Kildonan East Reivers who gave us our toughest game earlier in the season. The Championship game I played both sides of the ball. giving it my all just like all my teammates where doing. The Game was close the first half of the game, but as soon as the opening kickoff of the second half was over our team came out hellbent on winning. As the final Seconds ticked down the final score read West Kildonan: 42 Kildonan East: 16.”

Mitchell has many people to thank along the way including:

Neville Scarlett: “My head coach Neville Scarlett has been the best coach I’ve had yet.”

Steve Harder: “When I was in the Manitoba Provincial Program my Offensive line Coach Steve Harder was very Influential. Being at West Kildonan for the past two years, there was no coach at our school qualified enough to teach the lineman, so I was the one who lead them. Steve was the best Lineman Coach i’ve had and he turned me into the lineman I am today.”

Kurt Goodrich: “The Head team captain of the 2009 West Kildonan Championship Team. Kurt is a great wide receiver and im a lineman. You might ask what do you guys have in common and the answer is “not a lot”. Kurt was such an influential person to me because of his leadership to our team.”

Evan Gill: “Evan is a defensive end that played his high school football with the Churchill Bulldogs and is now signed with the Manitoba Bisons. We played on the same team in the Manitoba Provincial Program. Now I don’t know Evan personally nor do i think he even likes me but he was influential because he was the toughest lineman i’ve ever had to go against. Going againt Evan multiple times in practice prepared me more than I ever knew for the other defensive players at the Canada Cup Tournament.”

David MacKay: “My Dad is the most influential person of all to me. He is one of the ones that swayed me into football and is the only one who day to day makes sure I am on track with everything to ensure my next step forward. Anything I need he makes happen, whether its protein powder we need after a workout, nutritious foods we need for lunches/dinners, helping us achieve great marks by staying on our butts.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
