Clan overrun second half of Redwood Bowl

ARCATA, Calif. – Simon Fraser University hung with Humboldt State in the first half but the Jacks turned on the offence in the second and rolled past Simon Fraser with a 72-14 victory Saturday night in Redwood Bowl in Great Northwest Athletic Conference football action.

Quarterback Robert Webber through five touchdown passes and directed Humboldt State to 39 second half points in the victory.

HSU improves to 2-0 with the win, while Simon Fraser slips to 0-3.

Sophomore receiver Gavin Cobb kept the Clan in the game during the first half with two touchdown catches, the second set up by his own 83-yard kick-off return, as SFU trailed 21-14 late in the second quarter.

After that TD Humboldt scored 51 straight points to put the game away.

HSU accumulated 636 yards of total offense on the night, as Webber’s passing was supplemented by Ja’Quan Gardner’s 121 yards rushing on 12 carries. The Clan was held to just 193 total yards.

QB Miles Richardson was 20-of-41 for 145 yards and two TDs. Simon Fraser entered the week leading the GNAC and ranked 10th in Division II in passing offense, averaging 350.5 yards per game. The Clan is third in the league in total offense at 379.5 yards per game.

SFU RB Jalen Jana gained 52 yards on 9 carries.

SFU wide receiver Gavin Cobb caught 3 passes for 21 yards and was dangerous on kick returns, compiling 224 yards on 6 returns, including an 83-yarder.

Wide Receiver Justin Buren led the Simon Fraser offense with six catches for 59 yards. Buren entered the week ranked fourth in the GNAC with 85.5 receiving yards per game.

SFU’s Christian Philips caught 4 passes for 40 yards.

Next up on SFU’s schedule is a home game against Azusa Pacific, which has lost its last two games to GNAC opponents. The game is set for 1 PM on Saturday, Sept. 23. It will feature a Red Zone 19+ section and the SFU Football Alumni will honour long-time athletic therapist Al Best. The game will also feature $2 hamburgers at the YOKABAI Burger food truck.
