Clan falls 63-10 to nationally ranked Central Washington

BURNABY, BC – Simon Fraser University hung with nationally ranked Central Washington for a half before losing 63-10 on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference football game on Terry Fox Field.

Freshman quarterback Justin Seiber started his first game for the Clan and directed the offence  to both scores, a 13-yard TD pass to RB Jason Nelson and a 79-yard drive that led to a field goal. Seiber and regular starter Miles Richardson took turns directing the Clan offence, which totaled 295 yards.

SFU is now 1-3 overall (0-2 GNAC) while the No. 12 ranked Wildcats are 3-1 (3-0 GNAC).

After starting and directing the team’s first drive, Seiber came back in with the Clan trailing 28-0 and five minutes to go in the first half. He quickly led the Clan 65 yards in five plays, connecting with Nelson on a 13 yard TD pass in 2:08 seconds. After the Wildcats scored again, Seiber went eight plays and 79 yards in 1:13, leading to a Kees Metselaar 23-yard field goal.

Simon Fraser almost scored late in the first quarter with a field goal, but Metselaar’s kick was blocked by Chase Demoor.

Seiber went 20-of-33 for 186 yards while senior Miles Richardson was 5-of-9 for 44 yards. WR Liviano Canil finished with five catches for 56 yards while Nelson had 6 catches for 50 yards.

CWU starting QB Reilly  Hennessey finished 16-for-23 with 263 passing yards. RB Michael Roots picked up 186 yards on the ground.

In the first half, the CWU defense held Simon Fraser to just 42 rushing yards on 11 carries. They held Simon Fraser to a total of 65 yards on the ground for the game.

Central Washington finished with 315 yards gained on the ground, and 286 yards passing.

NEXT UP: The Clan is on the road for its next game Saturday in Monmouth, Oregon against Western Oregon (1 PM). The Wolves snapped their three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 38-13 win over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks to move to 1-3 overall.
