CIS RECAP [2]: Windsor shocks Guelph, Ottawa and Mac win

Game Recap: Michael Grobe

Toronto (5) vs McMaster (32)

The No. 8 McMaster Marauders dumped the Toronto Varsity Blues 32-5 on WeatherTech Football Day in Hamilton at Tim Hortons Field.

The win improves the Marauders record to 2-0 to start the 2016 campaign, while the Varsity Blues fall to 0-2 in OUA league play.
Asher Hastings of Regina tossed a touchdown to go with 346 yards in the win. Dan Vandervoort of Barrie, Ont. was the game’s top offensive player, pulling down five catches for 119 yards to go with a single touchdown.

On the ground McMaster’s Chris Pezzetta of Burlington, Ont., was the game’s top rusher, driving for 117 yards on 18 handoffs.
Toronto’s Rahul Madan of Scarborough, Ont., hauled in 12 receptions for 154 yards in the loss for the Varsity Blues.  Marcus Hobbs of Mississauga, Ont., finished 22 for 38 with 288 yards and one interceptions.

The Marauders defensive unit had a strong afternoon, with Robbie Yochim Kelowna, B.C., leading on the stat sheet, recording 7.5 tackles and an interception. Keldyn Ahlstedt of Whitby, Ont., had a blocked field goal, while on the same play, Ben Megarry of Burlington, Ont., returned a fumble for a touchdown.

McMaster kicker Adam Preocanin of Burlington, Ont., converted a career high six field goals in his second start with the Marauders. Preocanin has yet to miss a field goal opportunity having connected with three kicks last week (nine field goals in nine attempts).

Toronto’s points came on a conceded safety by McMaster and a 32-yard field goal by Ryan Grandell of Thunder Bay, Ont.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED: A blocked field goal by Ahlstedt helped McMaster break the game open in the third quarter. With the score 19-2, Ahlstedt blocked the kick, and the ball popped up immediately into an attacking Megarry who ran it back for a 70-yard fumble recovery touchdown.

DANNY V, BEING DANNY V: Vandervoort got the crowd on its feet midway through the second quarter when he made a spectacular one-handed grab to complete a 49-yard toss by Hastings. That set up an eventual three-yard touchdown from Hastings to Vandervoort, which put the Marauders up 13-2 at the time.  (Link to play: https://twitter.com/McMasterSports/status/772840826925789184/video/1

SOMETHING TO WORK ON: McMaster was slowed by penalty trouble against the Varsity Blues. The Marauders had 17 penalties for 189 yards while Toronto only had eight penalties for a loss of 50 yards.

THE COFFEE GROUNDS: The game was the first of two on WeatherTech Football Day in Hamilton, with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats hosting the Labour Day Classic vs. the Argos in the evening match at Tim Hortons Field.. It was the first time the Marauders have played at Tim Hortons Field since the new stadium opened in 2014.  Announced attendance at the game was 5,802 which puts McMaster’s yearly attendance over 10,000 in just two games.

UP NEXT: McMaster (2-0) will travel to the University of Ottawa (1-0) to take on the Gee-Gees in the nation’s capital next Saturday (Sept. 10).  In the last 10 games vs. Ottawa, the Marauders are 7-3 dating back to the 2005 season. Ottawa opened up their season today with a 65-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors.

Guelph (29) vs Windsor (33)

Labour Day weekend produced some shocking results around OUA football. Unfortunately for the No. 6-ranked Guelph Gryphons, they were on the wrong end of one of those shocking results.

Monday afternoon in Windsor, the defending Yates Cup champion Gryphons suffered a 33-29 loss at the hands of the Windsor Lancers. Both teams now sit at 1-1 on the season.

Fresh off of an impressive Week 1 win over Toronto, the Gryphons traveled to Windsor having won five straight and eight of their last nine head-to-head meetings with the Lancers. The Lancers meanwhile were coming off of a humiliating Week 1 loss in London where the Western Mustangs handed them a 78-6 defeat.

What a difference a week can make.

The No. 4-ranked Mustangs were upset by the Carleton Ravens on Sunday night in Ottawa. And on Monday, there was another upset brewing in the OUA as the upstart Lancers were giving the Gryphons all they could handle.

The game started off on a good note for the Gryphons with quarterback James Robertsmarching the offence 66 yards in seven plays, with the drive being capped off by a 22-yard touchdown pass to Colton Jones (Port Colborne, ON). For Roberts, it marked his first touchdown pass of the 2016 season. For Jones, it marked his first receiving touchdown at the university level as the second year receiver was dressing for just the second time in his career. It was also the lone touchdown of the first quarter as the Gryphons led 7-6 after 15 minutes of play.

In the second quarter, the Lancers would get a lift from their defence as they were twice able to intercept Roberts, with one of those INT’s coming in the form of a 62-yard pick-six by Windsor defensive back Lekan Idowu (Houston, TX). His defensive touchdown gave the Lancers a 13-7 lead. The Lancers led 17-10 late in the opening half and were threatening to push their lead to double digits before the Gryphon defence came up with a big play of their own. With 1:53 left to go before halftime, third year Gryphon linebacker Luke Korol came up with an interception of his own, picking off Lancers rookie quarterback Jalen Brady deep in Guelph territory. Korol also finished the day as the team’s leading tackler with 10.5 tackles to go along with his interception. Thanks in part to some strong play by the Gryphon ‘D’, the deficit was just four heading into the half.

An exciting second half of action started with an unsuccessful onside attempt from the Lancers. The Gryphons would take advantage of the good field position by putting together a solid drive that ended with a Gabe Ferraro field goal. On Guelph’s second possession of the third quarter, they would march 54-yards on six plays, with second year running backJamal Hooker finishing off the drive with a 4-yard TD run. The major was Hooker’s first as a Gryphon and Guelph led 20-17. But the lead would not last long.

Windsor was able to go back in front at the end of the third quarter when their star running back, Tarrence Crawford, capped off a long 75-yard drive by punching it in from two yards out on third and goal as the Lancers led 24-21 heading to the fourth. Crawford finished the day with 122 yards rushing on 20 carries (6.1 avg).

The biggest play of the game came with 6:41 remaining in regulation when Windsor receiver Noah Akharoh (Brampton, ON) hauled in a 54-yard touchdown pass to give the Lancers a 33-21 lead. While the upset alert was now on full blast, the defending Yates Cup champions showed tremendous character by fighting to the very end.

With 2:30 remaining, James Roberts connected with receiver Thomas Bresciani for a 20—yard touchdown strike to once again make it a one-score game at 33-27. The Gryphons followed that up with a successful onside kick attempt, giving them the ball and the momentum.

With 1:20 left in the final quarter, the Gryphons appeared to score the go-ahead touchdown, but Daniel Palmer-Salmon‘s 13-yard TD run was called back due to a holding. Palmer-Salmon led the Gryphons on the ground with 24 carries for 113 yards.

With just over a minute to go, Jamal Hooker would take a handoff from Roberts and plow his way down to the Windsor 11-yard line. However, Hooker would have the ball stripped by a Windsor tackler and the Lancers would jump on the loose ball to take over deep in their own end. It was one of two fumbles on the day by the Gryphons who were playing the game without the services of All-Star running back Johnny Augustine who suffered a lower body injury in Week 1 versus Toronto.

The Lancers would essentially run the clock out from there before conceding a late safety to make the final 33-29 in Windsor’s favour.

In the loss, the Gryphons received several terrific individual efforts. Senior receiver Ryan Nieuwesteeg set career-highs with 12 catches for 139 yards. Quarterback James Roberts set career-highs in completions and attempts, finishing the day 31-for-47, 362 yards, 2 TD & 2 INT. The Gryphons out-gained the Lancers 533 to 389 in total offence.

The Gryphons were also whistled for 9 penalties for 100 yards, something interim head coach Kevin MacNeill addressed after the game, “We had a lack of discipline and focus today, and that falls on me. We can’t be taking unnecessary penalties and still expect to win. We need to be better.”

The Gryphons will now return home to take on the Queen’s Gaels (0-1) on Saturday, September 10. The Gaels are coming off a bye week after suffering a loss to Laurier back in Week 1. Kickoff versus the Gaels at Alumni Stadium is set for 1pm on Saturday and will be televised live on Rogers Cable 20 for viewers in the Guelph area. The game will also be streamed live online at www.oua.tv.

Ottawa (65) vs Waterloo (1)

The Gee-Gees football team opened its season with a strong overall performance and earned a 65-1 victory against the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo on Labour Day Monday. The win was marked by an excellent passing offence led by both Derek Wendel and Victor Twynstra at quarterback, while the Ottawa defence showed its new look and allowed the fewest points of any OUA game so far this season.

Second-year corner Cody Cranston contributed two of Ottawa’s three interceptions on the day, and defensive end Sam Randazzo set the tone early with a first quarter sack. Waterloo was limited to 213 yards of offence and completed just eight passes.

Meanwhile, Derek Wendel led the offensive unit down the field with efficiency in the first half and scored on every drive before halftime. The fifth-year quarterback connected twice with Luke Ffrench for touchdown passes, while Mitchell Baines got the Gee-Gees down field quickly with a pair of jaw-dropping 47-yard and 60-yard receptions. Baines added a major of his own on a 10-yard catch and finished the day with 139 yards.

“We came out and worked hard,” said Baines. “I’ve been playing with Derek since 2011 and we can make plays like that because we know what we’re doing together. We were trying to do well for our defence because they were making plays for us.”

When Wendel gave way to Victor Twynstra late in the third quarter the fourth-year showed off his arm with an 86-yard touchdown pass to Tyler McLaren. On a play which started at the Ottawa 24, McLaren out-ran his defender to the end zone after catching the ball at the Waterloo 50-yard line.

Senior kicker Lewis Ward went three-for-three on field goal attempts for Ottawa, while Waterloo’s lone point came on a missed field goal attempt from 34 yards out in the second quarter.

York (3) vs Laurier (74)

The No. 10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team wracked up 575 rushing yards, the second most in school history, as they cruised to a 74-3 victory over the York Lions on Monday night at University Stadium.

Armed with a stable of seven running backs, three of whom registered over 100 yards in the contest, the Hawks (2-0) ran wild over the Lions (1-1), recording their best rushing performance since 1974 to post their best start to a season since 2007.

“It felt really good to finally play all three phases that well,” said head coach Michael Faulds after the game. “I mean, look how many rushers and running backs got touches and touchdowns, look at our defense with another defensive touchdown from Malcolm Thompson, and then on Special Teams, getting that Carson Ouellette touchdown, so when all three phases are rolling like that, that’s a complete team.”

Leading the way on the ground for the purple and gold was fifth year running back Eric Guiltinan of London, Ont. In just his second career start, Guiltinan posted the best game of his career, recording 180 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. It marked the second time the product of A.B. Lucas SS has run for 100 yards in his career.

Joining Guiltinan in eclipsing the 100-yard rushing mark were second year backs Levondre Gordon of Mississauga, Ont., and Osayi Iginuan of Hamilton. Both players ran over the century mark for the first time in their careers while also recording the first touchdowns of their careers. Gordon finished the game with 115 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries while Iginuan had 110 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

The Hawks, who had six rushing touchdowns in the contest, also got a major from Elijah Fera of Windsor, Ont., who scored his first career touchdown while posting 69 yards on 10 attempts.

“All our running backs played really great obviously,” said Guiltinan of the group’s performance. “[The offensive line] really opened up some good holes so it was nice that all the other guys got to contribute too.”

While the scoreline ended up as one of the most lopsided in team history, with Laurier scoring their fourth-most points in a game, the contest was very much in doubt through the first 15 minutes. Laurier held a narrow 4-3 lead after one quarter as both teams struggled to generate much offence.

However, the second quarter was a completely different story as the Hawks exploded for 31 points, highlighted by long touchdown runs from both Guiltinan (46 yards) and Gordon (57 yards) as well as a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive back Malcolm Thompson of Windsor, Ont.

For Thompson, who was playing his 13th career game at Laurier, including preseason, regular season and playoffs, it marks the fourth time he’s found the endzone. It was also the second consecutive year that he has registered a pick six against the Lions.

The second half was much like the second quarter for Laurier as they would go on to find the endzone six more times. Four touchdowns came on the ground, one was through the air, courtesy of Daniel Bennett of Scarborough, Ont., which marked the first career passing touchdown for Michael Knevel of Brantford, Ont., and one was scored on a 65-yard punt return touchdown from Carson Ouellette of Windsor, Ont.

Quarterback Julien John of Oakville, Ont., who struggled in Week 1, was solid for Laurier in the contest as he completed 8-of-16 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown while throwing one interception. Knevel, who was seeing his first game action of his OUA career in his fourth year with the team, was impressive as he completed 5-of-6 pass attempts for 110 yards and a touchdown.

When all was said and done, the Hawks wound up posting 814 total yards of offence while limited the Lions to just 238. Laurier’s defensive effort, which duplicated their performance in Week 1 against Queen’s, saw the purple and gold record six sacks in the game while picking up three turnovers.

The victory keeps Laurier in a tie for first place in the conference as they remain deadlocked with the McMaster Marauders as the only teams with two wins in the league.

Laurier will now use a bye week to rest up a prepare for a showdown with the No. 9 Carleton Ravens (1-1), who are coming off a victory over the No. 4 Western Mustangs. That game is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 17 at MNP Park in Ottawa.

NOTES: The 74 points is the most Laurier has scored under head coach Michael Faulds and the most the team has recorded since scoring 80 against McMaster in 1992…the most rushing yards Laurier has recorded in a game as a team is 637 against the same York Lions back in 1974, a mark that is an OUA record…defensive lineman Kwaku Boateng of Milton, Ont., recorded his 17th career sack to surpass Giancarlo Rapanaro for second most in school history…he currently sits half a sack behind the all-time leader Eric Schwab…Joshua Perez of Mississauga, Ont., also scored his first career touchdown on a 24-yard pass from John in the second quarter, giving Laurier four players who found the endzone for the first time in their careers on Monday…attendance at the game, which featured a large contingent of first year students for the Hawks’ annual O-Week game, was 4231
