OTTAWA (CIS) – Calgary quarterback Andrew Buckley, Western defensive lineman John Biewald and Calgary kicker Johnny Mark are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 19, 2015.
Buckley, a fifth-year kinesiology student from Calgary, was honoured on offence after he led the Dinos’ offence to a record-setting performance in a dominating 80-18 home win against previously undefeated Alberta, last Thursday. The 6-foot, 201-pound reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner was near perfect in Calgary’ third straight win of the campaign as he completed 27 of 33 passes (82%) for 452 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while also adding 29 rushing yards on four carries, all in just over three quarters of work. The nationally top-ranked Dinos ended up with a remarkable 975 yards of offence and their 80 points scored set a new single-game Canada West record, eclipsing their own previous mark of 78 established in 2012.
Acadia receiver Brian Jones, Montreal receiver Louis-Mathieu Normandin and Western quarterback Will Finch were also up for the award.
Biewald, a fourth-year social science student from Ottawa, took home the award on defence thanks to a dominating effort in a 48-25 home win over archrival Queen’s, on Saturday. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior recorded a career-best three sacks resulting in 17 yards of losses on the afternoon, and finished the contest with six tackles. In total, the third-ranked Mustangs (4-0) sacked quarterback Nate Hobbs no less than eight times as they remained tied with Guelph atop the OUA standings.
Linebackers Daniel Tshiamala of StFX, Arto Khatchikian of Concordia and Dane Bishop of Saskatchewan were also nominated.
Mark, a fifth-year science student from Peterborough, Ont., was the choice on special teams after he became the all-time leading scorer in CIS football history in last Thursday’s victory over Alberta. The 6-foot, 185-pound veteran, who entered the contest tied with former Western kicker Lirim Hajrullahu with 422 career points, passed Hajrullahu with an extra point just 2:29 in and finished the game with 10 converts in as many attempts, three field goals (35, 26, 31) in as many tries as well as a kickoff single, pushing the new national standard to 442. Mark now has his sights set on the CIS field goal record as he stands nine shy of the all-time mark with five league games remaining in his stellar career.
Mount Allison punter Kyle McLean, Laval returner Antony Dufour and Carleton kicker Michael Domagala were the other nominees.
