CIS Game of the Week [1]: Gaels debut new Richardson Stadium

Canadian Interuniversity Sport launches the Football Game of the Week on City this Saturday from Kingston, Ont., as the Queen’s Gaels host the Western Mustangs in the opening of the new Richardson Stadium.

The CIS Football Game of the Week, presented by Ontario University Athletics and Atlantic University Sport, will feature four exciting matchups from Sept. 17-Oct. 15, on the road to the 52nd ArcelorMittal Dofasco Vanier Cup, to be played Nov. 26 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.

Western has won the last three matchups between the two sides, including a 48-25 victory at home last season. The Gaels lead the all-time series 45-44-2, having gone head to head with the Mustangs 91 times since 1929.

With a $20 million renovation, the Richardson Stadium revitalization project offers improved sightlines and seating that is closer to the field of play to enhance the spectator experience.  In addition, the stadium will feature a state-of-the-art Jumbotron scoreboard, bowl seating design with 8,500 seats, new washrooms, improved stadium and area lighting.

Pre-game there will be plenty of festivities for fans of all ages to enjoy including face painting, balloon art and a performance from Kingston-native solo artist, Smitty.  Official on-field pre-game ceremonies will begin at 12:30 p.m. and fans are encouraged to arrive early and find their seats as the Canadian Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks, will be delivering the game balls to Richardson Stadium.

The national television schedule continues Sept. 24, featuring an OUA Yates Cup rematch between Western and Guelph during the Gryphons’ homecoming celebrations.
