Hagan Douglass started playing football in 2014 with the York Simcoe Bucs house league team, where he played for a season before moving up to the rep peewee team.

Up until this point, Hagan was also a competitive swimmer, but he found football much more exciting and left his swim team to focus on football.

He started on the defensive line as a tackle, where he remains today, while playing on the offensive line occasionally as a guard.

Currently, Hagan plays in the York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) with the St. Maximilian Kobe Mustangs, as well as the York Region Lions in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).

For this yearā€™s Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC), the tackle is interested to see how he measures up to other players in his age group.

ā€œIā€™d like to learn from as many different coaches as I can,ā€ said Hagan. ā€œI see OPC as an opportunity to do that.ā€

ā€œBefore I graduate high school, Iā€™d like to make an OPC team,ā€ added the Mustang.

When the Mustang is not playing football, he swims. ā€œThereā€™s no cardio like 30 minutes of butterfly,ā€ said Hagan. ā€œI lift weights, and am looking forward to trying out rugby now that Iā€™m in high school,ā€ added Hagan.

Playing football for his high school and his regional team exposes him to different coaches, allowing him to learn from coaches with different styles. He also does research by watching a lot of film, which helps him plan how heā€™s going to perform and teaches him what to expect in his games.

On the field, Haganā€™s role model is JJ Watt because he is everything he wants to be because he works out everyday, lifts an incredibly heavy amount, manages his back trouble and eats healthy.

ā€œJJ Watt is finally bringing some attention to the line,ā€ commented the Mustang, ā€œhe is so good at what he does, people have to pay attention. Sometimes linemen get no love.ā€

ā€œJJ plays so well, so hard, that you canā€™t ignore him, and people are forced to see how valuable lineman are,ā€ continued Hagan.

Moreover, Hagan loves football because it allows him to be physical, and get his aggression out on the field. ā€œSwimming is a solitary sport, I really prefer the team dynamic of football,ā€ said the tackle, ā€œthatā€™s itā€™s not just one player responsible for success, itā€™s a team effort.ā€

He has met some great guys through football because the sport attracts people who value the same things he does, hard work, teamwork, determination and strategy.
