#CFCHSFB PREVIEW (ONT – DURHAM) : Titans, Gators clash in fifth annual Football For the Cure

Five years ago, two bitter rivals met on the football field, not only to battle against eachother, but an enemy that affects us all.

The game, dubbed “Football for the Cure” has since been a staple in the season of both teams, drawing close to capacity crowds at the Oshawa Civic Field. This game is to raise funds for cancer research, with every penny of proceeds made at the game go towards finding a cure for the disease.

This game is perhaps the best example at the high school level of how an old, yet bitter rivalry can be for the better.

After the whistle blows and kickoff ensues, it’s just as hard played a game as you’d expect from two of the biggest rivals in Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (LOSSAA).

Donald A. Wilson Gators enter the game looking for their first win of the season, as well as their first win against a Holy Trinity Titans team that has gotten the better of the Gators the past two seasons.

The Gators have always looked to superior play in the trenches as a way to victory, often trying to impose their will on the ground early and often to gain control of the game. Although the Gators backfield may look slightly different without star tailback Jordan Grimes, don’t expect the Gators to change their identity on the ground as they’ve had a tradition of great ball carriers pre dating Grimes. The Gators must establish the ground game early and often in order to get a Titans defense that has been strong in the past, on its heels.

As for the Titans, they must establish an offensive identity of some sort after only putting up a paltry six points against the Royals last week. The Titans have many viable options for offense, with the reigning LOSSA MVP Nathan Jones  lining up in the backfield. The Titans could also look to slotback Alex Olay who averaged 6.4 yards a carry last year before suffering  a season ending injury, as well as putting up the only offensive touchdown last week. Though the Titans will most likely be working against a loaded box, it is imparative they get the run going.  Historically, the Titans’ strength has been a good running game. As well, breaking in new quarterback Michael Drake would be smooth if a run game was going well.

Both teams have what it takes to win this early season matchup of bitter rivals. The game is going to be comfortably cool and spectators are promised a showcase of great high school football as well a great cause.

Admission is five dollars for non students and two dollars for students, again all proceeds go directly to cancer research.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
