#CFCHSFB PREVIEW (MB): CFC#22 Trojans tough test for Pirates

The Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) is back Friday night with a highlight match up between the CFC#20 Vincent Massey Trojans and the Grant Park Pirates.

Vincent Massey is coming off of a 53-0 victory against the Sturgeon Heights Huskies while Grant Park lost a battle to the Oak Park Raiders 32-26. These two teams met last year with Vincent Massey walking away with a 42-1 victory.

This will be a big game, but an especially big game for the Pirates who have a bit of a sour taste in their mouths after last game.

“The team feels we let one slide away with some mental errors,” said Pirates Head Coach Doug Kovacs.

However, the Pirates did take some positives after the loss.

“We feel really good that we can compete in this division with the best teams and look forward to taking the next step this week,” said Kovacs.

Tyson Spence, who plays on both the defensive and offensive lines is also being positive.

“We just have to put that loss behind us and do what we do,” said Spence.

Vincent Massey’s special teams had a huge game last week. Massey’s Keenan Onyebuchi was awarded with Special Teams Player of the Week. Onyebuchi had 6 punt returns for 157 yards with a 26.2 yard average and a 75 punt return for a touchdown last week against the Huskies.

Trojans Head Coach Kelsey McKay said Oneybuchi’s contrubutions to the team are valuable.

“He has goals beyond high school, and it shows in his preparation, and game play,” said McKay.  “He has a great passion for the game, has fun playing football, so he’s a good role model for our team.”

At 1-1 and coming off of a blowout victory,  McKay said there is room for improvement.

“We have played hard each game, but somewhat inconsistent on offense, defense and special teams have been bright spots and I am very excited with our ‘progress of learning’,” added the Trojans Head Coach.

Friday night’s contest won’t be an easy one for the Pirates but they are looking forward to it.

“It will be a tough test for us and we look forward to competing at the highest level.” said Kovacs.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
