#CFC50 games of the week (West/Atlantic) RECAP [8]: Conference champions emerge, first round of playoffs in the books

We will be previewing/recapping the #CFC50 Games of the Week for the West and Atlantic regions. While this will be generally geared towards the #CFC50 ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by Tuesday each week and we’ll see what we can do: [email protected].

*Note: Some information was not available at press time. It will be added as it becomes available.

….and now let’s get to it with this week’s #CFC50 Games of the Week RECAP

No. 2 Bev Facey Falcons (8-0, 2-0) 33
No. 18 Harry Ainlay Titans (7-1, 1-0) 0
In what was supposed to be the game of the year in the Carr division in Edmonton, was a big let down. Facey dispatched Ainlay like all other foes this year. It’s obvious the team to beat in northern Alberta is the Falcons. Harry Ainlay will have to re-group quickly as they enter into the playoffs and Facey simple needs to maintain their momentum and not peak too early.

No. 5 Leboldus Golden Suns (7-0, 1-0) 49
O’Neil Titans (1-6) 7  (Semi-final)
Leboldus had no trouble moving on in the playoff rounds after soundly beating the Titans 49-7 in the semi-finals. No surprises here, they will now face Riffel for a third time this season.

No. 7 St. Paul’s Crusaders (8-0, 0-1) 68
Dakota Lancers (1-7) 0 (Quarter-finals)
We called it. St. Paul’s completely dominates another opponent as they march closer to their dinner date with Massey. However, they will have to get through Sturgeon Hts. in the second round first before that happens.

No. 8 Terry Fox Ravens (6-0, 0-2) 40
Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers (4-2) 6
The Ravens relied on a dominant running attack and a feisty defense as they jumped on Lord Tweedsmuir early. The Panthers turned the ball over too many times, were dominated up front, and could not slow down potential AAA MVP #CFC100 Jeremie Kankolongo. Terry Fox will look to wrap up their season against upstart Centennial who has one of the top DB’s in Western Canada in #CFC100 Keon Fuoco.

No. 9 Henry Wise Wood Warriors (6-0, 0-1) 42
St. Mary’s (3-3) 7
Henry Wise Wood goes into playoffs 6-0 after their win against St. Mary’s 42-7. HWW gets a first round bye and will face either Notre Dame or Bishop O’Byrne in the second round.

No. 13 St. Francis Browns (5-1, 1-0) 38
Crescent Heights (2-4) 6
The Browns seem to have re-grouped to come out the victor in this 38-6 win over Crescent Hts. We didn’t think they would have too much trouble in this one. They will now look towards getting ready for their playoff run which will see them matchup against either Centennial or Ernest Manning in round 2 as they get a first round bye.

No. 16 Vincent Massey Trojans (7-1, 1-0) 37
Garden City Fighting Gophers (2-6) 14 (Quarter-final)
The Fighting Gophers made a better account of themselves even though they were eliminated in the first round of playoffs. The Trojans will now go up against the (5-3) Murdoch MacKay Clansmen in the second round.

No. 20 New Westminster Hyacks (4-1, 2-1) 34
Belmont (1-5) 21
The Hyacks knew this game would be competitive going into it, but they came away with the win over Belmont, 34-21. They relied on a solid defensive effort in the first half, big contributions from the Special Teams to begin the second half, and a rushing attack that scored when it had to and bled the clock in the 4th quarter. It was Belmont’s Senior night and the seniors competed hard, especially #CFC100 Donte Bull who was dominate on both offense and defense. “Things only get harder from here. South Delta is now healthy and are as good as any team in the province. There will be a lot at stake and we will need our best game of the year to win.” – Head Coach Farhan Lalji

South Delta

No. 25 Mount Douglas Rams (3-2, 3-0) 13
South Delta (3-2) 36
South Delta is now healthy. The Devils are arguably one of the more talented teams in AAA, but have been dealing with injuries most of the season. The last two weeks, they have acquitted themselves well now that they have the majority of their athletes healthy and on the field. South Delta handed the Rams its second lopsided defeat of the season in the last two weeks. The Rams have struggled since losing their QB Gideone Kremler to injury. South Delta relied on big plays from QB Michael Calvert who hurt the Rams with his feet and his arm throughout the game. Calvert had several big plays on the ground and made plays when he had to through the air. This, along with a dominant performance by South Delta’s defense, would be the difference in the game.

No. 26 Centennial Chargers (7-0) 42
St. Joseph 0 (Semi-final)
The Chargers relied on their rushing attack to finish off St. Joseph’s 42-0 in the 4a semi-final. They will play Holy Cross in the final which was no surprise us.

No. 30 L.C.I. Rams (5-0, 2-2)
bye week

6 games in a row! Congrats Sr. boys! #goyotes

No. 32 Centennial Coyotes (5-1) 40
MCLA (1-5) 7
Centennial was still juiced up from their win over Notre Dame the weekend before; how could they not win this one. They will now go into the first round of playoffs in a matchup against Ernest Manning who have got some athletes. It won’t be an easy one as both teams are pretty evenly matched.

Who are we? #WeAreTitans !! Let’s get it boiz

No. 33 Tantramar Regional Titans (8-0) 49
Harrison Trimble (2-3) 0
Tantramar exploded for 5 touchdowns in the first quarter and went on to milk the clock and run the ball the remainder of the game as they distributed carries to four different ball carriers who accounted for close to 200 yards rushing and 5 rushing touchdowns. Tantramar’s starting QB, Jeff Lafford, was 6 for 6 for 92 yards passing and 1 touchdown pass. The Titans continue their undefeated season into the playoffs where they will meet Saint John in the semi’s who they defeated 47-6 in the regular season.

No. 34 Notre Dame Jugglers (4-1, 2-1) 24
Carson Graham Eagles (0-5) 14
Notre Dame ground out a hard fought victory against Carson Graham. The Eagles continuously made plays to keep themselves in the game, but were unable to close the gap with the Jugglers who controlled the time of possession and left quite a few points off the board through a variety of miscues and mental errors that allowed Carson Graham to stay in the game that was not actually as close as the score would lead you to believe.

No. 35 Vancouver College Fighting Irish (3-2, 2-1)
bye week

No. 39 Cobequid Ed. Centre Cougars (7-1) 28
Dartmouth High Spartans (2-6) 0
In a no contest win against Dartmouth, CEC finishes off their regular season 7-1 and gets ready for playoffs.

No. 42 Riffel Royals (5-2) 33
Campbell Tartans (4-3) 30 (Semi-final)
In a highly competitive game, the Royals once again beat the Tartans with a score of 33-30. This offensive slug-fest saw both teams move the ball up and down the field with effective ground games and several big plays. Looks like Riffel will keep their spot on the #CFC50 for another week, but next week is a doozy as they will face Leboldus in the conference final….and that might not be pretty.

No. 43 Holy Cross Crusaders (5-1, 1-0) 22
Aden Bowman Bears 21 (Semi-final)
Holy Cross pulled out a heart stopping 22-21 victory over long time rival, Aden Bowman, with a well balanced offensive attack led by Tanner Szakacs who went over the 100 yard mark on the ground. The other prime time performer was Jonah Bumphrey who was efficient throwing the ball and scored had 2 touchdowns.

Sir John A (6-1) 31
CP Allen (6-2) 7
We heard about this game late last week and were quite curious to see how it would turn out. From what have heard, Sir John A was clearly in the driver’s seat. SJA’s Adam Bennett rushed for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns, adding to the season total of 18 touchdowns in 7 games. This win will secure a first round bye to the semi-finals for SJA.
