#CFC50 Game Preview (SK): No. 4 LeBoldus take on Riffel in a battle for first place

It will be a battle of the unbeaten on September 22nd at Mosaic Field, as the #CFC50 No. 4 LeBoldus Golden Suns take on the Riffel Royals with first place up for grabs.

No. 4 LeBoldus come into the game as the heavy favourites despite both schools sporting a 2-0 record atop the RIFL’s Schwann Division. With that being said, a wise person would not count out Riffel as a serious threat after putting together two very impressive victories to begin the season. When you combine the total points from their first two games, the Royals have outscored their opponents 86-42, and in both contests were able score 40+ points. If Riffel plans on keeping their perfect record intact, they will need this trend to continue despite facing one of the best schools Canada has to offer.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Golden Suns have not failed to live up to their billing as one of the best, putting together two impressive performances of their own to kick off 2016. With a lot of pressure at the beginning of each season to meet the expectations set by many championship teams before them, LeBoldus did a good job in week one establishing themselves as a force once again knocking off the #CFC50 No. 31 Campbell Tartans 42-22. In week two, the Golden Suns found a way to improve their results on both sides of the ball, scoring a bit more on offence while allowing a little less on defence, en route to a 56-14 win over the Winston Knoll Wolverines.

If they want to avoid the same fate as Winston, one of the keys for Riffel heading into this game will be to keep their eyes on the road ahead instead of looking in the rear view mirror at their last meeting with LeBoldus. Riffel has been a perennially strong school blowing out most teams they play, that is until it comes time to face the likes of LeBoldus when the wheels always seem to fall off.

Last season the Royals were dispatched 49-6 at the hands of the Golden Suns, but then went on to reel off five straight victories by a combined score of 228-50. It is not a question of talent for Riffel, but possibly more of a mental hurdle that the team needs to overcome, and LeBoldus cannot take them lightly despite last season’s results. With both teams expected to lay it all on the line, the end result could easily swing either way with big plays such as turnovers or special teams making the difference.

Although it is only week three, the road to playoffs is slowly beginning to reveal itself, and if Riffel has any say in the matter, they hope to jab a huge fork in the road with a win over LeBoldus.

Players to watch: #CFC100 RB Kyle Borsa for Riffel and #CFC100 LB Nick Cross for the Golden Suns.

The action is set to kickoff at 5:15 CST at Mosaic Stadium.
