CFC100, 3 other commits ready to help SMU win

The Huskies bring in three Ontario commits and one local commit to their Class of 2017.

The city of Halifax entranced Peter Kourtis, an offensive lineman from Canada Prep Academy, so much that he chose to live their for potentially the next four years after he committed to the Saint Mary’s University Huskies.

CFC100 receiver Keegan Dicks from Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, defensive back Jamil Saoud from Ilsely High and receiver Joshua Henry from St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School have also joined the Huskies.

When Peter Kourtis toured the campus, the product of Toronto, Ontario, said he liked everything and everyone he saw and met. “The team is a close group with lots of support from the school and city,” he said. “I believe St. Mary’s is building a strong team and will compete for championships every year.”

The towering 6’6, 315lbs guard knows that nothing will come easy though: “I like the coaches. I bet they are going to push hard and prepare us for an opportunity at the next level.”

The Canada Prep Raider is interested in going into Criminology. Prior to his two years with the Raiders, he played three seasons with the Michael Power/St. Joseph Trojans (Toronto District Catholic Athletic Association). He was the Trojans’ 2015 lineman of the year. These past two seasons, he played with the Etobicoke Eagles (OVFL).

With U Sports on the horizon, Kourtis said: “I appreciate all the Canada Prep coaches, Geoff McArthur, Andre Clarke, Riley Herechuck, P. Bianco and Kevin Huntley for working hard and getting me ready for university.”

Jamil Saoud will be staying local and playing for hometown pride with the Huskies. Hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, he played with the J.L. Ilsely Judges (Nova Scotia Secondary School Athletic Federation).

“I grew up around the city of Halifax so I have become very comfortable with the area around the university. It feels like home. I believe it is the best fit academically and also athletically,” he said.

It will be a reunion of sorts for Saoud when he attends SMU. His older brother and two of his uncles went to the school. He said he has been familiar with the program and campus for years.

Saoud, who is interested in marketing and management, hit it off with the coaches right away. “Immediately after meeting Head Coach Colzie and coach Tufford, I felt comfortable with the program and optimistic about the future here at Saint Mary’s,” he said.

Standing at 5’10, 185lbs, he has played for Team Nova Scotia in three Football Canada Cups. In 2014 and 2016, he was named as a Team Nova Scotia team captain. He also played with the Halifax Argos from 2009 to 2013. He was a 2013 bantam MVP, the Judges’ and the NSSAAFFL rookie of the year and a three-time NSSAFFL all-star. He has also been the Judges most outstanding player in 2015 and the 2016 defensive MVP.

Saoud added that, “I am extremely excited to begin learning and growing as a player with the great coaching staff at SMU.”
