CFC ‘top 10’ Ontario Summer rankings: Varsity & Junior Varsity (Week 5) “The hurdle – video”

Here is CFCs ranking of the top 10 Varsity & Junior Varsity teams in Ontario summer football. The two leagues that are eligible for this ranking are the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) & the Ontario Football Conference (OFC). These two leagues do not play against one another during the regular or playoff seasons.

A few changes have occurred in the ‘TOP 10’, as a result of week 5 game results and play.

VARSITY (Under 20)

1. (1) Essex Ravens (OVFL) – [5-0]

Handled the Bisons of Brantford easily by a final of 52 to 6. Austin Crumb returned the opening kick off 80 yards for a touchdown and that was all the Ravens needed. The Ravens have the bye this week.

2. (2) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [5-0]

The Stampeders had to come from behind to win this game. After trailing 7 to 2 after the opening quarter it was the defense that sparked the comeback. Travel to Huronia to play the Stallions, who have been playing good ball of late.

3. (3) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [5-0]

Had the bye this week. Travel to Sault Ste Marie which should be an intriguing match up. These teams played 2 great games last year. Expect the same this weekend.

4. (4) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [5-0]

The Varsity Riders continue to improve from week to week, this week dismantling the Wildcats by a score of 23 to 7. Defense wins championships and this defense is rounding into form.

5. (6) Ottawa Cumberland Panthers (OVFL) – [4-1]

With less than 20 seconds remaining in the game the Panthers scored the only points of the game on a short field goal attempt over the Grenadiers. Have a bye this week before hosting the Wildcats the following week.

6. (10) Sault Ste. Marie Sabercats (OVFL) – [3-1]

After the 2nd week bye this team has been on fire. Ian Hutchison led the charge this week with four interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown of 54 yards. Host the Ironmen this week in the OVFL Varsity game of the week.

7. (7)Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [3-2*]

Bounced back after a loss to defeat the Oshawa Hawkeyes by a score of 44 to 0. Have a bye this week.

8. (9) Twin Cities Predators (OFC) – [4-1]

Outlasted the Hamilton Wentworth Panthers 32 to 21. Host the Forest City Thunderbirds this weekend.

9. (5) Metro Toronto Wildcats – [3-2]

Lost to the Myers Riders, the offense only scoring one touchdown. Have a bye this weekend.

10. (HM) Kingston Grenadiers – [2-2]

Despite a close loss this team has proved it can battle against the big boys of the league. Must improve offensive production to take the next step.

Honourable Mentions:
Brampton Bulldogs (OVFL), Niagara Spears (OVFL), Etobicoke Eagles (OVFL), Mississauga Warriors (OVFL)

* Toronto Thunder defeated Etobicoke Eagles in week 1 action in overtime 36 to 30 but the game was forfeited due to ‘ineligible player participation’ – Etobicoke is awarded a 20 to 0 victory

JUNIOR VARSITY (U17)

1. (1) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [5-0]

Another week, another big victory. Take a look at this nice play by QB Michael Arruda.

2. (2) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [5-0]

Like Myers, continue to dominate their opponents. Play the Huronia Stallions on the road this weekend which should be their first big test of the season.

3. (3) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [5-0]

Traveled to Kingston and returned with a hard fought victory. Have a bye this weekend.

4. (5) Niagara Spears (OVFL) – [4-1]

Move up a spot after another dominating victory. Have a bye this weekend.

5. (4) Mississauga Warriors (OVFL) – [4-1]

Outlasted the Brampton Bulldogs in the ‘battle of Peel’, winning in overtime by a score of 42 to 36. Have a bye this weekend.

6. (9) Cambridge Lions (OVFL) – [4-1]

Dominated the Cumberland Panthers and look to continue their winning ways this weekend against the Brantford Bisons.

7. (8) Pickering Dolphins (OVFL) – [3-1]

Defeated the Newmarket Bucs 28 to 14 and host the Kingston Grenadiers this weekend. Should be a game of the week in JV OVFL loop.

8. (10) Huronia Stallions (OFC) – [4-0]

Defeated the second squad from Twin Cities but this weekend is the big test as they play host to the league leading Burlington Stampeders.

9. (NR) Oshawa Hawkeyes (OVFL) – [3-2]

Defeated the Toronto Thunder in a great game 33 to 27. Travel to Etobicoke this weekend to take on the Eagles. Expect another tight game.

10. (7) Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [3-2]

Barely holding on to their top 10 ranking, this team must right the ship. A week off may do the trick.

NOTES:
a) teams eligible for ranking play in the OVFL or OFC
b) Contributors to the ranking include CFC reporters, CIS coaches, OVFL & OFC scouts – the pre-season team of contributors totaled 15 individuals…which we anticipate to grow during the course of the season
c) the only rule difference between the two leagues is that the Varsity OFC division plays 3-downs where all others play 4-downs
d) We will rank the ‘top 10’ up until and including the final regular season weekend
e) Have fun
