CFC OFC Game of Week Preview: “Hamilton is where we want to be”

Week three brought a disappointing loss for the Sudbury Gladiators of the Ontario Football Conference (OFC) when they fell 54-7 to the Hamilton Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes set the tone early in the game with a touchdown after a drive from the Gladiators’ 54 yard line, followed by a 35-yard field goal. The Gladiators answered with a touchdown of their own in the first quarter by defensive back Joshua Girolametto.

Unfortunately, that is all the Gladiators managed to earn.

The Hurricanes were strong throughout the entire game, but the Gladiators put up a fight.

“We played right through until the end,” said Gladiators Head Coach Reg Bonin. “When you play the best you get to see where you stand and where you need to improve.”

Sudbury plans to use this game as a learning opportunity.

“Hamilton is where we want to be and we’re gonna do whatever we can to get there,” Bonin noted. “It’s better that this loss happened in week three, than in the playoffs.”

The Sudbury Gladiator’s record is now 2-1 heading into week four.

The junior varsity Gladiators advanced their record to 1-2 with their 10-9 victory over the North Halton Crimson Tide early Saturday afternoon at the James Jerome Sports Complex.

Ben Ernst scored the team’s only touchdown in the second quarter.

“Defence played very well, offence played well too, just again mental mistakes would slow us down,” noted head coach Brandon Dougan.

While Dougan was pleased with the win, he sees room for improvement.

The junior varsity Gladiators will meet the Crimson Tide again later this season.

On June 15 (Sunday) both the junior and the varsity Gladiators will be on the road to face the Toronto Argonauts. The double-header will begin at 2:00pm with the juniors, followed by the varsity kick off at 5:00pm.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
