SHERBROOKE, Que. – ChΓ©rif Nicolas, a 40 year old from Montreal was named the 10th head coach in the modern era of the Bishop’s Gaiters football team. The announcement was made on Wednesday and Nicolas was introduced on Thursday in the John H. Price Sports and Recreation Centre on the Bishop’s University campus.

Nicolas was at the helm of the powerhouse CΓ©gep de Vieux MontrΓ©al Spartiates for the last seven years and amassed a 56-26 record. In 2014 they won the RΓ©seau du sport Γ©tudiant du QuΓ©bec (RSEQ )Division 1 Bol D’Or.

“We were fortunate to have several outstanding candidates from across Canada and ChΓ©rif was the unanimous choice of the Committee,” said Bishop’s Associate Athletic Director Joey Sabo. “He is an outstanding person, a great leader and a superb coach. He will be an excellent fit within the Gaiter Family.”

When Nicolas steps onto the sideline in August it will be his first time as a head coach at the U Sports level.Β  Prior to leading the Spartiates as their head coach he was their defensive coordinator for a season. Nicolas also coached at College Notre Dame in various capacities and spent a year on the Montreal Carabins sideline earlier in his career.

“This is a very proud moment,” said Nicolas. “I met some great people during the process and am very thrilled to be here.Β  I’ve been very involved in the Quebec football community; I know a lot of people at the different levels and am ready to take the next step in my coaching career. It is an honour to be given the responsibility of leading this football program. I look forward to working with the players, coaches and Bishop’s loyal alumni”.

Nicolas suited up for the Carleton Ravens and Concordia Stingers as an undergraduate and played two seasons for the Montreal Carabins while he completed his law degree.Β  Upon graduation he practiced law for six years before returning to football to pursue his passion.

He also has experience coaching the team Quebec and team Canada U-18 Selections and is a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Master Learning Facilitator for both competition coaching and Safe Contact clinics.

Nicolas will formally start in January 2017.
