CÉGEP10 RANKINGS (5): Blow up the rankings after another crazy week in Quebec

1. André-Grasset Phénix (4-1)
It was all smooth sailing for Andre-Grasset, then they ran into Saint-Jean. They ended up falling 29-23 in overtime, but thanks to all the madness throughout the standings, they hold onto their top ranking – for now. It will be very interesting to see how they handle Vanier this week. CFC60 Jonathan Senecal threw for 290 yards and three touchdowns, but he wasn’t provided much help out of the backfield.

2. Vieux Montréal Spartiates (4-1)
Vieux Montreal had an opportunity to take over the league, but they couldn’t jump on the golden chance. Garneau handed them their first loss of the season 37-28, and now they no longer can enjoy that two game cushion with the rest of the pack. Arnaud Desjardins had another productive day with nearly 300 yards of total offence from under centre, but three interceptions and the inability to stop the run would bring an end to their undefeated season. Their ranking is on thin ice as well, but they should bounce back against Limoilou next week.

3. Saint-Jean Géants (3-2)
You know things are getting crazy when Saint-Jean jumps into the three spot, but they’ve been the hottest team in CEGEP earning their third straight victory. First they beat Vanier, then CNDF, but they made their biggest statement yet by taking down Andre-Grasset 29-23 in overtime. Edouard Arsenault came up huge with six receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while the trio of Etienne Doyon, Bruno Senechal and Mai Jie Yuan combined for 57 carries in the backfield. Who knows how long this streak will last, but you’ve got no choice but to take them seriously right now.

4. Vanier Cheetahs (3-2)
After a massive reshuffle in the rankings, the Cheetahs stay put at number four, but they’ve got a chance to rise if they can take out Andre-Grasset this week. They had no issues defeating Levis-Lauzon 36-9, and their defence is beginning to establish themselves as top dogs in the division. The Faucons didn’t stand a chance with the Cheetahs’ defence racking up eight sacks, three interceptions, plus one defensive touchdown along the way. Everybody knows defence wins championships, so the Cheetahs may even be the favourites once playoff time rolls around.

5. Garneau Élans (3-2)
It’s been a strange year in Quebec, and Garneau have been one of the surprise teams after adding another massive upset to their resume. The Elans dispatched of Vieux Montreal 37-28, and they did so by sticking to the ground with Emile Malenfant rushing for 107 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Tristan Blais added another 41 yards and two touchdowns on 12 attempts. Their defence also made some big plays grabbing three interceptions and four sacks, making them a team nobody wants to face come playoff time.

6. Ch.-Lennoxville Cougars (3-2)
Despite coming away with a 54-17 victory over Lionel-Groulx, Champlain is forced to take a dip this week with the other programs revealing their true colours. The Cougars three wins came against CNDF, Limoilou and Lionel Groulx – who hold a combined record of 3-12 – meanwhile they fell flat in their two matchups against Vieux Montreal and Andre-Grasset. That’s not to say the Cougars can’t repeat this year, but they’re going to need to prove themselves with three tough matchups incoming.

7. Lévis-Lauzon Faucons (2-3)
After trying to right the ship with a big win last week, it was back to square one for Levis-Lauzon after a rough 36-9 loss at the hands of Vanier. Gabriel Leblond had a productive day with 21 carries for 98 yards and a major, but costly turnovers didn’t allow them to find much of a rhythm on offence. The one positive is they’re still in the playoff hunt with the logjam going on in the middle of the standings, but they’ll need to dig deep with Saint-Jean, Vieux Montreal, Andre-Grasset and Champlain left on their schedule. They still control their own destiny, which is all you can ask for in sports.

8. Limoilou Titans (1-4)
It’s been a long time coming, but Limoilou is finally on the board with a 30-17 victory over CNDF. Five interceptions on defence set them up for success, and Olivier Bamrounsavath did the rest with 21 carries for 164 yards and four touchdowns. Usually Bamrounsavath is tasked with throwing the ball, but he’s split time with Felix Lacasse throughout the season, yet he still leads the team in rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns. It’s a strange scenario, but the Titans will take the W and boost of confidence heading into their matchup with Vieux Montreal.

9. Notre-Dame-de-Foy (1-4)
It unfortunately was a disastrous week for CNDF. Without Raphael Latulippe starting for the second week in a row, they had four different players toss a pass, and ended up with more interceptions than completions on the day in their 30-17 loss to Limoilou. Alex Duff had a good outing carrying the ball 21 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns, plus they added another 100+ yards to their total, but it’s hard to win nowadays without a sufficient passing attack.

10. Lionel-Groulx Nordiques (1-4)
Things looked promising when Lionel-Groulx upset Saint-Jean in week two, but it’s been a downhill slide ever since. They continued their fall with another 54-17 loss to Champlain, and they’ve now allowed 50+ points in three of their losses. They’ve also scored less points than any other team in the division, but it was never going to be an easy road for the newcomer this year. Jason Roy was a steady influence against the Cougars with seven receptions for 62 yards, but they couldn’t find a consistent gameplan to keep up on the scoreboard.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
